i'm not sure if this has been requested, mentioned, or permanently struck down yet, but does anyone think that being able to identify the authors of both upvotes and downvotes would be a good idea? i wouldn't mind having my votes displayed with everyone else's and would like to see who specifically is casting the votes. i don't have a real reason to suggest this change other than that i would be interested to see that info.

holy smokes! i hadn't even thought of that! you got me so good! i'm impressed by your incredible wit!

but seriously, would you guys favor having the voters identities revealed? i think it would be interesting to see who agreed or disagreed with a post.

Displaced, you have truly cut to the core of me.

Frankly, I don't even notice the up/down votes. It was a novelty when it was started, but it has no connection to the actual worth of a post in my mind.

I downvoted you, if that helps.

The only time I ever even use the voting option is when someone starts a thread pointing out downvotes. Then I downvote their posts.

I'd be in favor of downvotes actually mattering. Like, a certain number of downvotes auto anchors a thread, and the more downvotes a user gets, he/she gets some form of retribution for it.

my interest is not in determining the value of a post. rather, i'd be more interested to see who agrees with what, so that i have a clearer picture of users' opinions who haven't participated in the discussion otherwise.

I don't take much of what I and others post here that seriously, so I'm more like your username.

this would be ridiculous. horrible idea.

The IM circle jerk crew would team up against posters they deem "uncool" and get them banned.

the danger, of course, would be users gaming the system by using alters and that sort of thing, but i do think it would be interesting to see some sort of process come from the votes that rewards or punishes users. but i don't necessarily even think that's necessary. the social effect of user votes, alone, would likely have some effect on behavior because it would entail a very small amount of accountability.

I think the accountability comes from responses to idiotic posts, not the number of down votes.

i think that it would have the potential of stream-lining some threads. for instance, when someone posts something funny, there may be a series of emoticon response posts. those are fine, but they do add unnecessary length to threads, which isn't a big deal or anything. but the effect that the emoticon posts and up or down votes that display the voters' identities would be the same. and those emoticon posts inflate the reply counts, sometimes resulting in a thread with many replies but little information.

That's what the RA button is for. If a group of people are consistently prickish, they go.
