How much of Jimmy McNulty do you see in Rust Cohle? Towards the beginning of the Wire, I see many things in common.

The 1st 5 episodes of True Detecive are better than the 1st 4 seasons of the Wire put together. The last 3 episodes are equal to season 5. Both series fizzle.

True Detective still has more time to gain or depreciate.

Overall they are very different characters. They are only similar in very vague ways.

They are both disrespectful to authority. They are both skilled detectives. They are both alcoholics. They are both estranged, in a way, from their families. They handle each of these situations very differently though.

Cohle is a dark moral elitist. McNulty is a serial cheater. Cohle would hate McNulty.

they both like to drink?

McNulty got a lot more arse though.

but McNulty never fricked his partner's wife either.

Rust gets some real bastard points for that one.

True Detective vs The Wire

I tried to watch both but the first episode of each did nothing for me and I stopped watching. Someone tell me how far I have to get into the shows to get "hooked" please.

Everyone says that season's 3 and 4 are supposed to be the masterpieces of The Wire but I found them to be somewhat of a letdown. Season 5 is completely screwed up.

The amount of plot that gets developed in the first 4 seasons is not all that great when compared to the first 5 episodes of TD. Where they get you in those 5 episodes is a special experience. Granted I could not quit watching The Wire and it grabbed me only to really let me down in the end. But The Wire is more of a soap opera compared to TD.

I say that TD has a real shot and knocked off The Wire only because of how badly The Wire betrays us in the end and screws up everything they built on.

uhh, what, is this a joke?

What is with everyone and True Detective? It was a solid first season, but you compare 5 episodes and say there is more development than the first 50 episodes of the wire?

Don't come here with that bullshite. You started a thread about this a few months ago only to have almost every poster on this board call you an idiot for quitting after one episode of The Wire. And while they did so (and they were right), they also gave you respectable recommendations about how many episodes to watch. I'm forced to think that this is a troll.

Go back to the Gaming board.

ETA: LINK

I stand corrected, half of the first episode. troll

These posts get so old.

"Please convince me why I need to watch (insert critically acclaimed TV show). I only watched 1 episode and didn't get it. "

You didn't even give the shows a chance yet we're supposed to tell you why you need to watch it? GFY.

This is probably a lame troll because I don't even know how you can't like TD's first episode. That was one of the best "pilots" I've ever seen.
