Amazon just announced its own video streaming device: Amazon FireTV. "We need to invent and simplify on behalf of customers," said Amazon's Peter Larsen. During the presentation, Larsen went over three pain points of current devices: search, performance, and "closed ecosystem." Amazon's new hardware promises to solve all of these areas where other devices struggle.

In terms of performance, FireTV features a quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM, which Larsen said should eliminate any hint of lag. Amazon claims it's three times faster than the latest set-top boxes from Roku and Apple. Amazon is also looking to avoid complaints of a closed ecosystem by bringing in numerous partners. "It's got a ton of content," said Larsen.

Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo, MLB.tv, and the NBA will be among the apps available on FireTV. Amazon's Instant Video takes top billing, but the company says it wants to help customers find the best deal for most videos with a "best value buy box." This will reveal where a show or movie can be watched cheapest, but only Amazon Instant Video and Hulu Plus will be included in results at launch. Amazon is also packing in some extras that take advantage of its other online services. A photos app will display all of the mobile shots you've backed up with Amazon Cloud Drive on your TV.

Amazon really is in the running for greatest company ever. Certainly the best one in existence today. Putting there competition in their streaming service and integrating them into their products.

Thanks for posting this.

The only glaring miss for the FireTV is no HBOGO package. The Roku 3 has a slight lead over the FireTV imo.

**All of this is making me want to cut Direct TV soon.

oh well. as far as I can tell the firetv doesnt have the mirroring capable that apple and google offer. thats really the biggest draw for me.

just need google to get off their arse and fix their tab casting.

I see myself replacing my Apple TV's very soon.

And yes, Amazon is THE BEST company around, if not ever. From shopping to streaming they are 100% consumer friendly and conscious. Their return policy is unheard of; they accept returns on everything. I double bought a blu ray recently and emailed them about returning it. Not only did they offer me a refund, they told me to just keep both copies. I shop very few other places

ive realized this will have to be the solution. i was hoping for something smoother and wiresless. i think google will eventually get there. but in the mean time, thatll work.

eta: i actually bought it through amazon. if i really wanted to, im sure i could return it. especially if i said it was to get the firetv

Somebody needs to give me soccer on demand and I'll add to the small village of electronics around my TV.

MLS or some sort of international package. That's all I ask for.

My solution was a dedicated home theater computer in the living room connected to our LCD TV. As you say, problem solved. I either RIP or download what I want onto multi-terabyte hard drives and play it all in full screen HD; no streaming required.

apple

Certainly isn't. If I ran the ecosystem, maybe. But I run Windows/Linux/Android. I'm not a fan of any of their products save for the iPad.

It's been slow. I love the Chromecast for Youtube and computer mirroring. That's about it. It's worth it for that alone. I haven't had success with streaming anything else really. Netflix is slower than the TV or WiiU.
