Study: Too much running = shorter lifespan

recent research suggests there may a point of diminishing returns with running. A number of studies have suggested that a "moderate" running regimen -- a total of two to three hours per week, according to one expert -- appears best for longevity, refuting the typical "more is better" mantra for physical activity.

Good, never much threat of me running more than that.

Hopefully someone will do more extensive studies on this (3800 in this study). I think the point of diminishing returns applies to many aspects of health and wellness and lots of things taken to the extreme could be considered harmful to health.

Sounds like another reason I should just keep doing interval training

Please post the study and a link. This sounds like the dumbest thing I have ever read in my entire life.

Its been pretty common knowledge that too much exercise can have a negative effect when you get older. Unless you are a regular marathoner or maybe a half marathoner, I doubt its doing too much damage.

The researchers behind the newest study on the issue say people who get either no exercise or high-mileage runners both tend to have shorter lifespans than moderate runners. But the reasons why remain unclear, they added.
It sounds like they should have finished their study before publishing this worthless shite.

This.
It's when it gets to marathon OCD levels that you are going to have issues. My step-uncle blew out both his hips because he ran too much haha.

I've read before that marathoners are less healthy than half-marathoners. No word on whether this applies to guys who run the CCC wearing beer hats.

I think I'll stick to 5k runs once or twice a week.

Considering most all creatures only get about 1 billion heartbeats in their lifetime, this shouldn't be that hard to figure out. Granted a runner's resting heartbeat will be much lower than someone who doesnt excersise, but constantly raising it for many long distance runs seems like it could reasonably shorten your lifespan.
Edit: I'm not too solid on that number for humans, but I think it's fairly accurate elsewhere.

And then they had to sit down because they got out of breath.
