Anyone's S/O have (or ever had) an eating disorder? Yesterday a girl I met a little over a month ago told me she's had one for a couple years and still struggles with it today. Originally I thought she just takes really good care of herself as she likes to workout and eats healthy, so it came as a shock to someone who had never personally known anyone with the disorder. We haven't talked about dating but wanted the OT's insight on the matter. Has anyone been successful in helping her, or him, get over the disease or is it expected that they'll struggle with it the rest of their lives? Do you interfere in anyway or just offer words of encouragement and hope they'll realize that what they're doing is completely unnecessary, and not to mention extremely harmful to their bodies?

Sorry no pics of said girl

Of all the problems in America, people being too skinny should be of least priority. If she's thin and cute, who cares how she maintains it? If she's a skeleton then you wouldn't want her anyway.

all chicks have some sort of disorder. you just have to make sure they won't try to kill you. my diet pill taking ex wife used to war paint her face with period blood and stalk, kill & eat neighborhood pets...i got away from her before it got worse.

If she also has daddy issues, strap in and hang on. Do not date her seriously, but enjoy the sex. She will put a hurting on you. I've said this on here for years.

There's going to be an underlying cause for it. The three that I've known that had eating disorders was because of sexuality issues, and all 3 came out as lesbians during treatment. Daddy issues, neglect, abuse; it's never a good reason someone has an eating disorder.

Disclaimer: not a shrink. Just personal experiences with friends.

As mentioned, there has to be an underlying cause for the extremely low self esteem. Get to the root of the problem rather than band-aiding the problem.

Dated a girl in late high school and early college who was "bulimic" (or at least partially. She would eat normally but then ummmm expel it soon after.

I quickly realized it was stupid to take her out to nice places to eat if she was going to throw it all up. She got pissed. I broke it off. Turns out she has more craziness going on than I even knew.

Oh, I have since met 3 of her now 5 ex-husbands. Looks like I got off easy on that one.

Let he know you will be there for her, then offer her something to choke on...

Marry that chick ASAP!! You've gotta get out of jail free card anytime you want. "Yeah I got drunk and wrecked the car, but at least I don't have an eating disorder." Marital bliss bro.

I did and can tell you that it is a no win situation. You should view the eating disorder as a type of addiction in that the person that has the disorder will not benefit from help unless she wants the help. If the person does not want the help then she will wreck you the more you try to help. You have to wait for her to reach rock bottom and come to the realization that she needs help.
