INDIANAPOLIS (WDRB) — Kevin Ware is leaving the University of Louisville basketball program.

Cardinals coach Rick Pitino confirmed it before leaving the team hotel this morning after Friday's NCAA Sweet 16 loss to Kentucky.

"We wish Kevin Godspeed," Pitino said.

Ware was the focal point of college basketball one year ago in this city, after a gruesome broken leg he suffered in the first half of Louisville's win over Duke in the Elite Eight.

He received an outpouring of support from around the nation, and fan mail by the thousands.

He made a quicker-than-expected return, just 220 days after the injury, with a three-pointer in an exhibition victory on Nov. 6, and appeared on his way to a remarkable comeback when he came down on the injured leg wrong in a win over Missouri State on Dec. 17 and did not play again. He will seek a medical redshirt.

My guess is he probably ends up with Pearl at Auburn.

I'm kinda sad to see Louisville's run end. They were a great team.

I think it's likely we see Kentucky in the title game.

I think Behanan running into the issues he did off the court and then transferring is what did them in. As well as Harrell has played as of late, they needed that other post presence.

And UK can't come out like they did last night against Michigan or they'll get absolutely torched with too big of a hole to crawl out of. I worry about the perimeter defense.

Oh I agree. Between Behanan at Louisville, McGary at Michigan, and Ashley at Arizona, those literally might be the three best teams in the country if all those guys didn't get hurt.

Your guess? Or what you've read?

When it was announced before I read anything in depth about it I said I thought he'd probably end up at Auburn. It was pretty common knowledge here (I'm in Louisville FWIW) that he was committed to Pearl at UT before he ended up at UofL. Just seems like a pretty natural progression.

FWIW, I've read that he's also looking at Georgia State but you'd have to think he'd rather go to Auburn.

Didn't some Kentucky player end up at GSU to be closer to his ailing father?

Yep. Former PG Ryan Harrow. His Dad had a bad stroke during last season at UK and that promoted the transfer. He's doing pretty well down there too.

Wasn't there a bunch of rumors that Ware is a bit of a tPOS, but the university didn't allow a lot of it to come out because of the whole inspirational story stuff last NCAA tourney?

How does a university not allow something like that to come out?

By not kicking him off the team like they did to Behanan?

Well, how many people actually know Ware was suspended for awhile during their championship season before the injury?

It's all about perception.

Plenty of people. Because journalists caught wind of it. That was discussed during the championship game last year.

I'm not denying that the story was pro-Louisville, but I don't think it's because Louisville made it that way. The story that ran was the story that was more attractive to outlets.

Yeah, this was definitely a behind-the-scenes story last spring and even into the fall. I'm not surprised he is transferring but I'm wondering if he'll get a waiver for this year since he basically sat out anyway.

They said he was put on a medical redshirt this year, but I am not sure how that works in terms of transferring.

I think he would still have to sit out a year because he still played a portion of the season with the medical redshirt. As to whether he'd be able to apply to waive sitting out, I have no idea. I'm curious as to how it would work with the eligibility counter.

Wherever he transfers, he'll have a leg up on the competition.
