I'll be moving soon and I'll be taking all my of guitars and amps with me. Currently I have left them at my parents house where they are covered under their large policy. For the renter's policy I plan to take out, will I need to have my guitars and amps appraised? One amp and a custom made Ceriatone Overtone Special and I have two guitars that are custom made Stratocasters... and a trombone. I called the local guitar shop, and he gave me a guy's number in Nashville. FWIW, I plan to be moving to Birmingham.

How do you cover your musical instruments?

I don't think you'll have to have them appraised, but it has been years since I've had a renters policy. I do remember taking out a small separate policy for Jewelry, mainly for my wife's wedding ring and band, and some other diamond jewelry she has, that we had an appraisal on. Call your insurance agent first and see if they'll want an appraisal on the instruments. I wouldn't go to the trouble to get one unless required.

I just had to provide an inventory/ list w/ serial #s and approximate value. But the most expensive guitar I have is $2k. If those custom jobs are really expensive, I'm not sure what your insurance would require. Call the renter's policy company and ask.

My most expensive guitar is a parts-o-caster but worth at least a grand in parts. I'll give the agent I will using a call and see what he says.
