Bought a Mosin M44 a while back and caught the bug. Any suggestions for good serviceable C&R guns, pistols or rifles, that I can pick up for ~ $500. Got a Garand from my granpa but haven't fired it because it hasn't been shot since WWII. Not concerned about safety, just like the historical aspect of it.

Thinking about a Tokarev Zastava or a Schmidt Rubin carbine.

Thoughts?

Curios & Relics - basically older weapons that can be purchased with a C&R license without going thru a "full" FFL dealer.

Q: What is a firearm curio or relic?

Firearm curios or relics include firearms which have special value to collectors because they possess some qualities not ordinarily associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons. To be recognized as curios or relics, firearms must fall within one of the following categories:

Have been manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas thereof; or
Be certified by the curator of a municipal, State, or Federal museum which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; or
Derive a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are novel, rare, bizarre, or from the fact of their association with some historical figure, period, or event.

Don't have a license, but will probably get one since as I understand it, they are free (or super cheap). Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out.

Ohh and pics of the suggestions would be appreciated!

How about a M1A1 with folding stock and 30 round mag...?

Was on my list for a while, but that .30 carbine round is just a bit too weak. It's a bad arse rifle though - paratrooper carbine from WWII

Those 30 carbines are beautiful rifles. But I agree - expensive to shoot and underpowered. The defensive carbine now is completely different than it was 60 years ago, that's for sure.

I went with a carbine that'll push a 125 gr. .357 factory load up to 2,300 fps, whereas the .30 carbine is listed at about 2,000 fps with a 110 gr. bullet. Slightly more power, much cheaper/easier to find ammo.

For plinking, at $.40 per round, I'll agree with the "expensive to shoot" (compared to .223 FMJ ammo at around $.30 per round).

Under-powered ?? Nnnah.

CorBox DPX (solid copper) rounds penetrate 18+ inches in 10% ballistic gelatin, and expand to almost .60 caliber, according to Doc Roberts' tests. If anything, its terminal ballistics might be too powerful for SD.

I'm not sure how I'd need more "power" from a lightweight, easily controllable rifle for home defense or truck gun usage.

My application is basically a truck/farm gun. I can get better performance with a .357 Buffalo Bore for less money than those .30 corbons. I can load standard .357, .38 +p, or just plain old .38 LRNs for plinking. I can easily go from 125 gr. to 180 gr. Add in the use of .357/.38 in my revolver, and it just made more sense to me.

So I don't have to have a more powerful round than the .30, but I can easily load for more power if I want (hogs), or power down and cheap.

You get your license yet?

It feels like a month already for me, even though it's only been a week.

Those are all very good points.

But it might be worth noting that .30 carbines are 10x more plentiful than .357 carbines.
