That's a whole bunch of shots at Gen. Beauregard's.

Earlier this month, a bank teller accidentally deposited $31,000 into a teenager's bank account. The teen did the sensible thing and immediately started buying shite, spending more than $25,000 in just ten days.

On March 7, a customer at a Athens, Ga. bank attempted to deposit $31,000 into his account at First Citizens Bank. But, as it turns out, there was more than one customer at the bank with the man's name, and the teller accidentally deposited the money into the wrong person's account.
That's a whole bunch of shots at Gen. Beauregard's.

yeah...how exactly does that work...payment plan or all at once?

The system is very straightforward. If you make a banking mistake, you are at fault. If the bank makes a banking mistake, you are at fault. In this instance, the only correct action on the teen's part would have been to inform the bank of the error as soon as it was discovered.

Tellers making deposits into the wrong account happen more often than you think.

That's what the FDIC is for. Teen enjoys cash spree and original customer still gets money.
Total wallet ache felt by tax paying american public by this mistake: .02 cents. Not 2 cents. .02.

That's going to take quite a while, given that this genius will likely be asking "You want fries with that" for a living.
Trying to BS the bank by claiming that the $30K was an inheritance is pretty stupid given that they've got the records of where it came from.

the teenager will be at fault for knowingly spending money that wasn't his/hers

It's the banks fault for making a mistake. It is his fault for spending the money that he knew wasn't his.

If it were me I'd withdraw the cash and put it in a safety deposit box at another bank, go to the first bank and offer them half. Then I'd get thrown in jail and they'd take it all.

Money in my account is mine
But I understand what the law is, and what the repercussions are. I just think its a raw deal.

No it's not. This isn't like an extra hundred dollars in his account that he figured maybe really was his....this was thousands of dollars.

If your neighbor comes home and parks his vehicle in your driveway and leaves the keys in, do you get to keep it?
