One over the basin while driving and one near the house. I have seen one by the house in the spring for 3 or 4 years now. They must be making a little bit of a comeback. If you see one please report the sighting...

It's time to start seeing them. The girl that tracks them is very appreciative of reported sightings. I think I reported 12 last year.

Different birds in different areas or birds all in the same area?

The vagrants have not been vagranting.

They are one of my favorite birds. I've gotten my dad fairly interested/excited about them, and he has reported them to the girl at LDWF.

I haven't seen one yet this year. We saw one fairly regularly up until last year. Maybe he/she will be back.

All different. Might have been one or two that I doubled up on, but working all over south Louisiana I get a lot of windshield time.

I've seen quite a few this year already. Got some decent video of 2 in Homosassa just a few weeks ago. I've seen groups as large as 3-4 just North of my home.

What is the info to send to the LDWF girl? I filled out the form at the bird's of Prey site...

Very cool bird. I've seen a few in the Basin and often when I drive north of Mobile on the interstate at the 3 long bridges. There are a bunch around St. Augustine where my sister lives and in the fall on the Georgia coast dozens gather to eat emerging locusts. When I see one I usually put the sighting on eBird which is an excellent resource for anyone interested in where bird species can be found.

Found this for her Swallow-Tailed Kite Sightings
quote:
Please Report Swallow-tailed Kite Sightings
Biologist, Jennifer Coulson, and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) request reports of sightings of this rare bird. Of particular interest are:
any sightings of a kite on LDWF managed lands,
areas where kites are often seen,
sightings of more than one kite,
sightings were kite(s) vocalized (giving kee-kee-kee, or klee-klee-klee calls),
kites carrying nest material or food,
nests or roosts, and
any kites found injured, ill, or dead.
Please report the following information about each sighting (if known):
Date of sighting
Time of day
Number observed
Location [please be specific and include the Parish or County, nearest town and approximate distance to it, nearest road (including street address if applicable) or road junctions, nearest river or creek]
What birds were observed doing (e.g., one perched in a cottonwood while another circled overhead)
Observer's name and contact information (phone number with area code and e-mail address)
To Report a Sighting:
E-mail Jennifer Coulson: Jacoulson@aol.com
Or call her: (504) 717-3544
Jennifer Coulson is studying the population ecology of the Swallow-tailed Kite. She is trying to determine: the geographic range of this species within Louisiana and Mississippi, the current population size, and factors that may limit the current population size. Aspects of her study include nest monitoring, a radio-telemetry based survivorship study, characterization of nesting and roosting habitat, and aerial surveys of premigration roosts.

Oh wow, I am pretty sure I have seen one of these in a tree by my house for the past three days (in the Harveston subdivision at Bluebonnet/Burbank). In fact, I took a picture of it yesterday thinking it was an eagle, but then if flew down from its tree and I realized that it had a lot more white on its body than an eagle. I'll have to check it out tomorrow and try to get a closer picture.

Near water? Sounds like Osprey.

They nest behind my house every year.
I have only seen 2 pair so far but about 6 years ago there where 18 birds.
They are amazing to watch especially when they get together in spiral.
