I have an Epiphone Masterbuilt like this one. It's a great guitar, very robust sound and very well crafted. If you buy a used one, you can find them in that range.

ebay

Go to guitar center and play a bunch. Definitely check out the used section. Also stop at every pawn shop you see

I'm a beginner. What would I look for with regard to a used guitar? Meaning, cracks? Fret damage? shite like that.

Yes, check for cracks. Check the backside of the headstock where it meets the neck, that's a very weak spot. If cosmetic issues arent a big deal to you (buckle rash on back side, dings, dents, etc) you can find some decent deals in pawn shops. I like ebay because it's like a gigantic pawn shop. The downside is shipping and not having the opportunity to play the instrument first, but there are higher quality instruments on ebay for cheaper prices in better conidition.

Then forget what I said about pawn shops. How much of a beginner? Can you any chords? Or are you literally just starting out?

Spend $500 and get a Baby Taylor.

Really nice guitar for the price and easy to play.

I wouldn't spend that much. My BIL wants to learn the mandolin so I let him borrow mine to see if he actually enjoyed learning it first. Then he can give it back to me and buy one if he enjoys it. Lots of folks have guitars, not that many play them a lot. You could probably find one of your buddies and do something similar.

Takamine has great guitars in that range. The ones in that range that I've played all had good action and sound. You can probably find an acoustic/electric in that price range too.

Then honestly I wouldn't spend that much. Get one for 200 max. Learn to play a little and once you've got some practice under your belt you can find a sound and style you really like. That's the best advice I can give you. When you're just starting out look online for a starter kit. One that comes with a guitar and a strap and a tuner and a book. Guitarcenter.com or musiciansfriend.com are great places to look.

I had a Cort in that range that was a solid guitar. Maybe look into less well-known brands like Cort where you aren't paying so much for the brand name.

Completely agree. I recommend this guitar to all beginners. $500 may sound steep but it's a $500 dollar guitar that sounds as good as some $1000 ones. It's a Taylor Big Baby, btw.

Check Craigslist. There's always quitters selling their barely played guitars on there for cheap.
