I'm about to go all schizophrenic, so just bear with me...

I hate the way this team is playing right now. Pitching is good, very good, but not much else. Defense, baserunning, hitting have all been below standard. Something has to be done; changes have to be made; attitudes have to change. If not, we'll finish in the middle of the SEC and won't host.

Now, all that being said, I posted before the season that this would happen. That the team would start to struggle at the beginning of SEC play once things got tough and there was actual pressure to win important games. In fact, I said it was a good/necessary thing for a team that lost so many leaders to face some adversity. Because here is where the true leaders of the team step forward. The pitching staff has found theirs. Now the position players need a guy or two. They don't need to be vocal or even full-time starters. Just be able to lead by example at practice and coming up big in games.

This is how this team can still win 45-50 games, 18-20 games in SEC, and be the best team they've been all year at the end of the season when it matters.

We'll find our groove. This team will still win a lot of games. We are really down on the performance so far but we have played one of the best teams in the SEC and country and still have a solid 20-5 record. That's not exactly a poor record, we are just spoiled. Yeah we coulda, woulda, shoulda swept Yale and finished off Georgia, but baseball is a funny game and even more so the last 3 years. The old adage of hitting is contagious is true. Ibarra and Breggy will start to break out soon and then the rest of the team will follow suit. Kade and Steve-o are really carrying the load right now.

If you look at the potential of the lineup, you'll see that it's still there, but the team as a whole is in a funk.

Bregs, big time.

Ibarra, also way down from last year.

Stevenson doing better but he can't carry the load.

Hale started well, has faded.

McMullen shows flashes of strong hitting.

Scivicque also, but he's been inconsistent of late.

Get 2 or 3 of these guys out of their slump and we get more timely hits and win these "tie" games.

I'm not giving up yet.

I really believe if this team can just put a couple of good offensive performances together they can get things rolling. Hitting is a lot about confidence and some of our guys are probably lacking that right now.

Slumps don't just end on there own though. This team and these hitters and the coaches must make some adjustments. This is where coaching and confidence come together and are so important.

Oh I agree that you can't simply swing your way out of it. Let's hope we try and do something.

Stuff like that actually works. Skip used to have a toilet handle so guys could "flush it". Get upset all you want, then flush it and it's completely over. On to the next play. Rally monkeys. Can of corn.

It's a mental game where being relaxed and confident and focused is more important than taking 10 extra reps.

LSU has scored 5 runs in the last 33 innings of play.

While it is obvious that the team is in a slump, it should also be obvious that the lineup is fundamentally flawed as compared to years past in the hitting department. Their ceiling is much lower than years past.

The bad news is that the schedule will only get harder. Therefore, even if they start to hit better, it may not be reflected in game results.

Looks to be a tough year my friends.

is it a "slump" or is it that this team is made up of below average hitters?

I honestly believe our lineup is stacked full of .300+ hitters. Really, at least 7 of the regular starting 9 should be .300+ hitters.

The two guys that I would have not been surprised if they were hitting below .300 coming into the season are our two best hitters right now (Stevenson and Sciv). So that oughta tell you something.

Everyone below should hit .300+ IMO:

McMullen
Laird
Breggy
Sciv
Hale
Ibarra
Stevenson

Few of these guys are playing like it right now, but they all should hit well THROUGHOUT the season.

So, in the end, I guess my answer is that it's ironic that a lot of our every day starters are slumping at the same time. I hate to say something that sounds so biased, but it's the only logical explanation I think fits what's currently going on.

One thing I'll say about McMullen. He's had some bad luck recently too. That ball he hit for a double play last night was a rocket shot.

Maybe compared to last year but this is still a fantastic roster with loads of potential. Theyre just not playing well right now.

Both. They could improve but I don't think the ceiling is high enough to get to Omaha.

when p.m. first came to LSU I remember telling my friends that they would hate him after a couple of seasons because he was small balling like crazy. this is before the new bats.

then, he quit small balling and won a n.c.

then, they changed the bats and back to "advancing runners" he went.

there are situations that call for this but, he does it way too much.

I played collegiate baseball and I would like to tell all of you idiots that are panicking to relax.

losing to an inferior team happens all the time.

it's all about tweaking for post season.

I'm thinking about buying each of the hitters a garter belt to wear during games.

It worked for Ebby Calvin "Nuke" Laloosh......

Not really. We've hit into way too many double plays not to bunt as much as we have. And it would work more if we could get hits with RISP.
