I've never been tuna fishing....I'm hoping to make a trip or two this year. I was watching Wicked Tuna this weekend and I noticed that they put the pole in rod holders and reeled the fish in that way.....is that standard? Or do you put the rod in a belt and muscle that thing in? Need to know if I need to up my workout regimen in prep for the trip.

We held the rods and/or put them in a belt on my one tuna trip. Caught them on top of the water behind a shimp boat. It was like trying to hold onto a runaway bull by the tail. Fun shite.

They fight those fish that way because they are much larger than yellowfin, and the gear weighs a ton.

If you hook one the size of a VW, I would use the rod holder.

yeah, the way WT fight fish is not how we do here. Use a belt stick the butt between your legs.

So I might try and do this as well this year. I do not own an offshore rod/reel of any kind, name something CHEAP I can get? I am probably going to check out that shop in the NOLA CBD that sells used rods/reels but don't know what I need.

What type of weight/capacities/etc. should I be looking at?

I will likely not go farther at than the closest rigs in Breton Sound on very rare occasions. So instead of making jokes, make suggestions please.
