Got a new lease ( hunted it last year as a guest but got it for myself now)

Good deer numbers and nice young bucks. Looking to maybe make one or two mineral sites to help them.

Then again, I may be better off staying away and letting the deer do their thing

How do those "rack supplements" (Bone-D-Monium, AntlerMax,etc) work? I've always been skeptical but seen just enough mention of them on here and other boards to wonder if giving them a shot is worth it.

I've had good luck with Imperial Whitetail 30-06. If you go this route just use the minerals, don't spend the extra money on the + protein. If you have a place to store the everything you can mix your own for much cheaper. Here's a recipe off of the QDMA site that I've used

Ingredients: Makes 200 lbs. for about $23.00

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $11.00 you need one bag.

2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loos kind without the medications.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $5.00 you need two bags.

1 part Stock salt, ice cream salt.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $2.00 you need one bag.

Directions:

-Use a 3 pound or similar size coffee can to use as your measure for each part of the mix.

-Mix all together well but not until read to use, keep ingredients separate until ready to put to use.

-Dig or tear up a circle in the soil about 36 inches wide and about 6 inches deep.

-Mix your mineral mixture with the soil.

The biggest difference we see between the protein fed deer and non protein fed deer is the mass, and yes it really works

When we first put it out we mixed it 50/50 with corn, it took them a while to start really hitting it hard but now they love it

Ive tried the protein pellets mixed with corn out of the feeders and a trough and the only thing that ate it was coons

I may set up a few mineral sites with the powder type stuff and see if I can get them to start hitting it.

Id really like to do soybeans. In fact, id like to plant a 5 acre field in soybeans and corn but the land owner is very particular about how much activity is on the land

if your hunting up in west feliciana i'd STRONGLY suggest plain old NaCl. that ground is sodium deficient and there deer are usually looking for it (whether they know it or not). just use plain ice cream salt chopped into the ground. make sure not to put it in an area where you are concerned about erosion because sodium will make your clay particles defloculate and wash away in a rain. that silty ground can be tricky to manage.
it works, and its CHEAP.

We've tried the bag salt before on some land not far from where ill be with minimal results

I read somewhere one time that bucks basically get a form of osteoporosis each year when growing antlers. Depending on the severity of it the deers body will make sure that it gets enough to stay healthy and that usually results in less calcium going into antler growth. If you can overcome that then their racks will grow to full potential.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Hopefully by May I'll have my mineral / feed sites going, trail cams out, and stands hung so I can let the place sit till October

i'm kinda supprised at that. i had them eating the salt/dirt for a good while using this. the sodium may be something necessary for them to properly use calcium

Actually no but talking to some guys that hunt the western part of the parish in the swamp they said its the only mineral / jam/ attractant flavor they have had continued success with

The area we tried salt was bordering Mike Wampold's property and he gives the deer all they need in food plots and feed so that may have been the reason they didnt hit it hard
