When a team wins the NIT, does that mean that they should have been in the NCAA?

Lots of times, teams get a chip on their shoulder and try to win the NIT to prove that they should have been in the NCAA. But, does it mean that?

Discuss.

the winner of the nit usually would probably make it to the sweet 16 without a problem. there are so many conference champs that don't belong in the field that it's not even funny.

No discussion needed....the answer is no. Nobody pays attention to the NIT except the teams fans. I could not tell you who won it last year or any year.

Probably.

Does it mean they would have gotten past the 1st round in the NCAA tournament? No

This just isn't even remotely true.

Huh? Have you looked at some teams that make the tourney as at large?

Some teams, yes. Some teams, no.

All depends on who the team is and what not.

And teams know what they are playing for in the regular season. They are playing to get in the tourney. Getting a chip on their shoulder to win the NIT to prove they should have been in the NCAA tourney is pointless. Its too late to have that chip and mind set. Should have had it during the season.

Yeah there are a few snubs every year. Doesnt mean they go on and win the NIT.

And the winner of the NIT would easily be a Sweet 16 team?? haha ok. So a team that couldnt get into the tourney is easily a Sweet 16 team... right right, makes a lot of sense.

I think there were 17 regular season conference champions in the NIT who lost in their conference tournament. Most were in the championship game of the conference tournament.

what!!?

if they dont make the tourney that means if they were even on the bubbble they would come in as a 12-16 seed.

best case scenario they win 1 game and then get smashed by a 1/2/3/4 seed

NIT teams are probably like 8-12 seeds. There are no 14-16 seeds invited to the NIT.

The NIT champion is definitely NCAA Tournament worthy. Automatic Sweet Sixteen? Wouldn't go that far. Definitely capable of winning the first two rounds, though.

So in your opinion, what conference champs don't belong this year?

Cal Poly was 14-20 (6-10 in conference).
