They will hear cases and up for grabs... the First amendment...

quote:

Next Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear two cases related to the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, and the stakes are high for both sides. In fact, the interpretation of a semi-colon in the context of the First Amendment could play a critical role.

quote:

the authors of the First Amendment only separated the Free Exercise Clause and the Free Speech Clause by a semi-colon, thus showing the continuation of intent between the two,”

quote:

“We are not persuaded that the use of a semi-colon means that each clause of the First Amendment must be interpreted jointly.”

So will they be examining the historical use of the semicolon at the time of drafting?

I once saved about $500/month on a 7 year lease because the family lawyer who wrote it fogot a comma.

I imagine a semi colon could easily save us more.

Well, there is a semi-black president who gets the full value of the "That's racist" card. So, there's THAT

This is the sole purpose of law school and the reason some attorney's make so much money. Normal people would never think to make an argument over a comma.....but a lawyer sees a comma error and can envision all sorts of damages suffered by the public. I suspect this is also why the average salary for attorney's is so low because the vast majority of law school graduates are normal and thus unable to see hoardes of disfigured bodies are wads of lost income due to misplaced punctuation....

Words mean something. Punctuation in legal documents means something.

Oooops, I need to retract the first sentence of my post, or at least qualify it with a "sometimes" . . . .

It appears that things which were clear to the Founding Fathers are not so clear to our present society?
