I'm not a big drinker, so this grinds me gears a bit. They compared this to 2005 which was around $300k.

The Washington Times reported in December that the State Department purchased $180,000 in liquor in September to stock embassy cabinets, right before the partial federal government shutdown. All told, the State Department last year purchased more than $400,000 in alcohol — more than triple the amount it bought in 2008.

This administration's spending is out of control.

To be honest, if the idiots in D. C. claimed that they were drunk all the time, then it would make stupid shite like NSA spying, IRS targeting, Benghazi, and O-care a little more understandable. At least then they would have an excuse - not a good one, but an excuse nonetheless.

This is one issue that grinds my gears. There should be no government official at any level (Fed, state, city, etc.) where alcohol is paid with taxpayer money. Absolutely no reason for it. If the government official wants to drink, reach into your own pocket using your own money.

For some reason this issue does not resonate with me. $1.3 million just doesn't seem like that much. Hell, the defense department alone employs 800,000 people and this spending for booze is for the entire federal government.

As long as you're being impartial.

Embassies overseas commonly host events and use liquor as a social lubricant, but the expense shows an increase in lavish spending that far outpaces inflation. The consumer price index has risen 40 points from 2005 to 2014 — roughly a 40 percent increase in prices and a far cry from the quadrupling of government purchases — according to information from the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Well they aren't buying the CPI, they're buying alcohol. Wouldn't the rise in the price of alcohol be the relevant statistic to use?

Perhaps Shrub just likes shwag beer.

You'd need to drink if you worked for Obama.

You want the State Department to host receptions and parties where foreign dignitaries pay for their own drinks?

Why not? Where is said alcohol must be served at government functions? I know it is an unpopular opinion, but it is an unnecessary expense.

Why are the foreign dignitaries drinking 4 times as much as they were in 2005?

If other countries supply alcohol at their dinners, and we suddenly start charging to drink at ours it makes us look like bad hosts. And if the alcohol helps the State Department forge stronger relationships it more than pays for itself.
