do we actually see an expanded role for Desean Smith or do we stick mainly with Gordon?

Its obvious that Gordon is the better blocking tight end. Any truth to the rumor that Desean Smith is soft?

Smith could be very valuable as a receiving threat, provided we throw to TE's. I don't quite have my hopes up yet, but given our inexperience at QB, it would be nice to have more TE action.

Gordon seems like a beast and may have additional potential as a pass-catcher...he just needs to fix that temper of his.

I mean I don't think the "soft" jab is needed...some guys are better at things than others. He's more of an offensive threat. We knew that when he was recruited.

We don't use the TE much. We haven't done so since Richard Dickson in 2007. Maybe it's due to lack of talent at the postiion or maybe it's a gameplan issue. Either way I wouldn't get too excited about it. If we are using them more this year it's gonna be due to lack of WR development.

When Cameron has good TE's, he uses them. We simply didn't have any viable TE receiving threats last year. PLUS we had two beast WR's, a RB averaging about 7 yards a pop, and DeSean (our most viable receiving TE) was just a true freshman.

I would definitely look for TE's to be more involved this year.

Nothing settles down a QB like easy completions to get the mojo flowing. An effective TE dump route can do just that. I hope we start involving the TE's more this season, especially if we do not have dominant wideouts like last year.

Desean Smith will be a household name by the end of his career.

Smith is about as soft as Funchess is soft. I think you meant to say he's not good at blocking, and that is typical with athletic TEs. Just about every top TE going in the draft, you'll hear (needs to work on blocking).

It wasn't just that. Mett hardly ever looked to the TE. Did you not see many a time Dickson streaking down the middle of the field wide open? When Jennings came in against Arky, 2 of his 7 passes were to the TEs. Even against Iowa, a few of his throws went to the TE. I read on a recruiting article about Cam showing Washington (our 2014 TE pick up) on video that he had many designed passes to the TE that Mett decided not to throw to. When your 3rd leading receiver is your RB with 181 yards, and you pass for over 3000, you limit the effectiveness of your passing game.

Wouldnt say hes soft. Hes more of a WR than a true TE.

I think Smith is gonna be our leading receiver next year. We wont be running the same type of system we did last year. Last year, we had a QB with an elite arm in Mett and 2 WRs that were trouble for every team. So we threw it wide a lot. We had the means to.

We dont have the QB or WRs like we did last year. We have the OL and Magee and LF. Gonna be a running team and pass off the PA. We need to make it easier for our QB, whoever he is, by using our mismatches and routes over the middle.

Thats where DeSean Smith will be. Hes a mismatch for both DBs and LBs. Has the size over DBs and the athleticism over LBs.

Plus, look at how Cam has used TEs in the past. Dennis Pitta and Antonio Gates became premiere TEs in the NFL under Cameron. When he has a pass catching threat at TE, he uses it.
