Have you ever dated someone with bipolar or have a family member who has it? Do you have it yourself? Looking to hear about first hand experiences and to learn more about this illness.

This is a trick question right? I think every female is a psych visit away from being diagnosed.

You'll get more misinformation than anything here, but I do have a family member that has it.

bottom line, it's hell. total emotional roller coaster

You're not an emotional roller coaster if you're on the right meds. But it's hard to find the best cocktail and a good doctor

I have it, have married and dated people with it and have a sister with it

If its a family member with it, best of luck. It will take a lot out of you over the years.

Dated a girl who had it during college.

After we broke up, she one night broke into my parents house (during summer and while they were gone and I was there alone). And threatened to cut herself in front of me with a fairly large knife.

We argued, and somehow I said at one point "frick this, I'm going to bed." And I left her downstairs. She came upstairs later and she did cut herself, just not on the wrist or anything.

Her breaking into the house was pretty damn scary though. She rang the doorbell literally 60 times. I should have called the cops.

My ex had it. It's hell dating someone with it that doesn't take their meds. Basically you feel like you are walking on eggshells with them the entire relationship and your mood begins to be based off what mood they are in.

This was my best solution to dealing with it....

A few people (two of them therapists, but only once of whom actually met him) suggested that my ex-husband may have it, but he was never formally diagnosed, and I don't think he does.

I dated a girl that was bi-polar, it wasn't Paige. She wasn't on meds at the time. I don't recommend it. She ended up in the nut house for a hot minute.

She sounds borderline, not bipolar

There's actually a lot of overlap and misdiagnosis

You hit a 340 yard drive on a par five straight down the middle and you smile.
You slice your 2nd into the pond and snap your 4 iron in half.
You chili dip your drop back into the pond and laugh about it for 20 minutes.
You slam dunk your 5th from 130 yards out and drive the cart into the lake because you didn't do it on the 3rd shot.

A lot like that.

What Type are you asking about? They are VERY different depending on the Type.

It was scary as hell.

I am laying in bed and the crying I hear outside my house (along with the doorbell ringing) I all of a sudden hear downstairs.

I remember thinking, "Welp, is this how I die?"

My experience is that most people that make jokes like this have never seen mental illness, and they don't realize that bipolar is very different than being very happy and very sad.

I've seen people in manic states that didn't sleep for several days on end. Lots of them go out and gamble pretty frequently. They kind of lose track of caring about things they were supposed to do, but they're so focused on these other things that they "have" to do that it doesn't really matter to them. Usually they get the police called on them who bring them to the ER which ships them off to a psych unit. They'll hang out in a psych hospital until they come down, get back on their meds, and go about their way. They can be pretty normal people when they take their meds on a regular basis. But when they don't, it can be a pretty crazy ride. Mania is no joke.

ETA: I've come across a few that are more aggressive in their manic states than anything else. They just seem like real assholes and like to argue with everyone about everything.

Then it's rough. I don't know why people don't take their meds. Feeling like crap sucks

It's like when I was put on anti-depressants. Found out the hard way I'm one of those who can't take them

I'd cycle weekly like clockwork. One week I could barely drag myself out of bed and hated life. The next week I'd be up early after very little sleep and get ready for work like it was a beauty pageant
