Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said on Tuesday that the conflict in its Crimea peninsula, now under Russian control, had entered a military phase after an Ukrainian officer was killed in an alleged Russian shooting at a Crimea base.

"The conflict is moving from a political one to a military one because of Russian soldiers," he told a meeting at Ukraine's defense ministry. "Today, Russian soldiers began shooting at Ukrainian servicemen and this is a war crime without any expiry under a statute of limitations."

Yatseniuk said he had ordered Ukraine's defense minister to call a meeting with his counterparts from Britain, France, and Russia - signatories to a 1994 treaty guaranteeing Ukraine's borders to "prevent an escalation of the conflict".

Earlier, a military spokesman said a Ukrainian officer was killed in a shooting at a military facility on the outskirts of the Crimean capital Simferopol, but it was unclear who was behind the incident.

I expect some shooting to happen in Crimea as the Russians begin pushing out the Ukrainian military that are still in the bases.

America is on this. Putin will learn the hard way. If he thinks he can break International Law and invade sovereign countries without an intense flurry of words and letters from our direction he is sadly mistaken.

I'm sure they probably could. However, they are probably aware that they would be wiped out in any firefight.

I can't even imagine how tense and crappy it is to be a Ukrainian soldier in Crimea right now.

There is nothing for them to do but vacate Crimea and leave it to the Russians.

The West, under US leadership, will not go to war over Crimea, under any circumstances.

However, it is time for the USA to prepare for war in order to protect NATO nations, and to bring Ukraine into NATO as soon as possible.

Is Ukraine independence worth the price of young Americans' blood?

What type of government would we be protecting in Ukraine? Would they be worthy of our sacrifice?

bring Ukraine into NATO

1994 treaty guaranteeing Ukraine's borders to "prevent an escalation of the conflict"

So they have not come to NATO and joined in 20 years? Now with trouble at the door step you want others to jump through hoops for them?

Not in my opinion.

I can't think of a single young person I know that I would sacrifice for those countries.

Soldiers have families, you know. It's awfully easy to suggest some other family send their kids off to die in a foreign war protecting some corrupt government.

I won't suggest someone else send their family members until I am prepared to sacrifice myself for the cause. To do otherwise is hypocritical, imo.

That seems kind of ironic. We didn't want them in before, but now with trouble at their doorstep, we want them in?

It was just this sort of trip-wire alliance system that got WWI going. I'm sick of it. We should simply decide each case on its own merits whether or not we are prepared to have our soldiers killed for the defense of other people.

This looks like it affects Europe more than us. If they see a problem with Putin gobbling up former Soviet states, let Germany mobilize. THAT would get Putin's attention FAR more than sending some Americans to Poland or some shite.

Think about it, what kind of government would we be sacrificing for in Ukraine?
