Are depressed people generally that way because of unrealistic expectations?

I have know a few people prone to depression in my life and they all seem to share one trait. The trait they share is a lack of contentment. Some of them want more than others but all of them never seem to be satisfied. Some of them have extremely unrealistic expectations and when things don't go that way they become depressed. On the other hand, in my life experiences, people who seem to have realistic expectations and not grandiose ones seem to be much happier and not experience depression. Am I on the mark with this theory?

Expectations don't have much to do with depression.

There are medical explanations for depression now. Lack of contentment may be more of an effect than a cause.

Are they depressed because they lack contentment or do they lack contentment because they are depressed?

I think that is certainly a viable reason for a large majority of those suffering from depression.

That's why you can't be afraid to lower your standards to up your average every now and then.

I never really considered this, but thinking about folks that I know who are depressed in some capacity (as well as being overly critical of myself often), I would agree with your theory.

this kind of goes in hand with the ADHD thread.

people need to just chill out, do stuff you're passionate about and do your best to not waste time when you ought to be productive...like right now as I type this from my work computer.

Depression is a mental state of mind.
People need to get over being sad and get in with their lives.
Everyone I ever knew that was diagnosed, was because a girl left them, or they couldn't get a job or something else.

THIS!

Depression is all in your head. It's the same with stress or even fear. If you can just convince yourself that it doesn't exist, then it wont.

I don't know. The most extreme example that comes to mind is a friend of mine in HS that used to say he planned to play professional football, drive race cars professionally and be a professional bike rider all within his life. The crazy thing is that he was not joking when he said he believed he would be able to do all of these things. It seems to me that those things nor coming to fruition may have lead to his depression.

I would say just the opposite actually

People I've known with the greatest ambition and aspirations are usually much more positive and even-keeled when dealing with failures

You friend was likely bi-polar with bouts of mania where he had grandiose ideas. And there is a difference between situational depression (death of a loved one, ending a relationship) and clinical depression (chemical make-up in the brain).

Clinical depression is from a chemical imbalance in the brain.

My gf left me I'm "depressed" is a totally different thing.

Really hope you're trolling...

Clinical depression is an illness. Chemical imbalances often are the underlying reason behind it. Sure, life events can spiral people down into depression, but depression is not something you can just "think away" or "get over." Would you tell someone with diabetes to just "get over it?"

C'mon OT, you're better than this...

I'm pretty sure that serious depression issues are pretty much a medical condition. I don't think that it's some kind of personality defect like what your post suggests.
