LOS ANGELES (AP) - A spokesman for the family of comedian David Brenner says the “Tonight Show” favorite has died. He was 78.
Brenner died Saturday afternoon at his home in New York City, said Jeff Abraham, who was Brenner’s publicist.
The gangly, toothy Brenner made more than 150 appearances as a guest and substitute host on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show,” starting in the 1970s.
His “Tonight” exposure turned the former documentary filmmaker into a hot comedian. Brenner was a regular on other TV talk shows and game shows and starred in four HBO comedy specials. He also briefly hosted
his own syndicated talk show in 1987.
Brenner continued to work steadily doing standup shows. A four-day gig last December included a New Year’s Eve show at a casino-resort in King of Prussia, Pa.

He was on an episode of Modern Family, playing himself, a comedian who Jay refers to as "less of a comic and more a guy making observations."
Brenner was hilarious.
RIP

I've seen a few of his stand ups. He was a funny dude.

David Brenner, the gangly, toothy-grinned “Tonight Show” favorite whose brand of observational comedy became a staple for other standup comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld and Paul Reiser, died Saturday. He was 78.
I figured that he was in his mid 60s.

Used to see him on Carson all the time. One of my favorite comedians ever. Didn't realize he was that old. R.I.P.

Great, funny guy. Gosh, I miss the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Man that sucks.
He was a funny guy. For those not quite old enough to remember, he was a regular substitute for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show back when it really was the TONIGHT SHOW. Nothing else on that late.

He was a late night fixture of my youth, he had that distinctive voice, and did really good-natured humor. Johnny didn't let just anybody on, and he let Brenner on more than anybody-158 times-which tells you everything you need to know.
RIP.
RIP.

A fixture of my childhood. He'll be missed (Brenner, that is).
eta: Just read that he is survived by his wife Tai Babilonia. She was a world champion pairs figure skater with Randy Gardner in the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. They could have beaten Irina Rodnina(that dirty whore who lit the flames in Sochi this year) and Alexander Zaitsev, but Gardner suffered a groin injury the day before the competition.

Of course. I was talking about Brenner. Guess I need to clarify for the short bus crowd.
