@AdamSchefter: Former Saints Pro-Bowl S Roman Harper reached agreement with Panthers on a two-year, $4.5M deal that includes $1.5M sign bonus, per source.

Glad he caught on somewhere. Not so glad its a division rival, but hopefully he won't thrive there.

Far cry from the $7m per we signed him to a couple of years ago.

And now it makes sense why they had to release Steve Smith. Those two would never get along.

That's pretty cheap. I would have taken him back for that price, for depth and veteran presence.

We only have 3 safeties. We need depth.

Unless we perform miracles this off-season with the LB corps, having Harper would have been nice depth in run protection and blitz capability. Most of last year we were running nickel defense anyway. Makes me wonder if they even tried to strike a deal with Harper before kicking him to the curb.

Harper shows a blitz, Brees audibles to a screen, PT with 200 yards receiving.

Problem?

Scenario:

Brees is picked off by Harper at the goal line. A race ensues between Harper and Brees....who wins?

Yes, because our screen game was so effective last year...

You playing the idiot today?

I'm referring to his inability to read the screen and cover the RB releasing. If he gets the blitz call, that's all that's on his mind.

I agree Harper could have been useful, and at $2.25m that seems like a fair price. But I think after taking a pay cut last year and then getting cut this year, he likely was rubbed the wrong way.

And one of the first things they usually do with players they still value but have diminishing roles is ask them to take a pay cut. He probably didn't want to do that 2 years in a row.

I imagine they also asked Moore, Sproles, and Thomas to do the same and PT is the only one that did.
