LINK

quote:

The USDA has adopted a range of strategies and programs designed to bring more people to SNAP, including taking on “pride.” A 2011 Hunger Champions Award document reveals that local assistance offices have been rewarded for “counteracting” pride and pushing more people to sign up for benefits.

The article's link to the awards page is broken, the correct link is here.

Reading through it, it is quite clear that the goal is to increase signups, not merely to help people through a temporary tight spot. People's sense of self-reliance must be stamped out.

I guess when we quit running ads for foodstamps in Mexico the government had to find new customers somehow.

Liberalism and Bureaucracy in lockstep are a truly dangerous thing . Imagine having a mandate to expand The State as inefficiently as possible, without regard for the effect on the taxpayer, the treasury or the American psyche. Just expand baby.

Forward!

you obviously didn't read the article

quote:

SNAP is an investment in our future...“However, too many low-income people who are eligible for the program do not participate and thus forgo nutrition assistance that could stretch their food dollars at the grocery store. Their communities lose out on the benefits provided by new SNAP dollars flowing into local economies.”

quote:

The USDA also claims increasing food stamp participation is an economic stimulus.

“Outreach and education are powerful tools in overcoming barriers to SNAP participation. Even a small increase in SNAP participation can have a substantial impact,” USDA continues. “If the national participation rate rose 5 percentage points, 1.9 million more low-income people would have an additional $1.3 billion in benefits per year to use to purchase healthy food and $2.5 billion total in new economic activity would be generated nationwide.”

Screw that. I want it to collapse when you are in your 40's not me. I got a home to pay off and kids to get out of the house.

That's the one that says if your window gets broken you leave it be until the DPW comes down and fixes it, right?

I love the new food stamp/welfare argument about how it benefits the economy. Where do they think the money comes from? Just appears out if thin air? completely ignores tax dollars being sucked up from somewhere else.

well you see, it's stimulus b/c taking it out of the hands of the middle or upper class means you take money out of the "Saving" or "investment" part of the economy and you bring it to the lower class, who is more likely to put that money into the "spending" part of the economy

this is the logic

I'm not sure what those terms mean.
Do you mean unallocated, as-yet-unspent State Expenditures for The People?
Do you even nomenclature?

Exactly. Plus it helps to address rising inequality because SNAP recipients can be counted on to spend wisely and invest in their futures.

Holy shite.

I'm ok with having a safety net. but this is bullshite. Stop marketing welfare to people..if the person doesn't come sign up then obviously he/she can make it without welfare.

They should be trying to save tax dollars as much as possible, not try to spend more.

In a sane world, we'd be celebrating the number of people who got off of public assistance rather than the number that got on.

I really don't see a problem with this. What the social services people are dealing with are stubborn folks who are in denial about their needs for assistance. They may actually be proud or simply using that word because they can't think of a better one.

This is similar to what my Oncologist (cancer doc for those that do not know) friend says is a big problem in his practice, he gives a cancer diagnosis and people are in denial so they don't get treated rapidly but go when it is too late, or sometimes not at all.

In this case this makes sure everyone get's what they have coming to them and helps overcome any rigid hang-ups some people may have for whatever reason.
