I don't see how this can possibly be a good thing.

I always thought Al G owned it.

U.S. officials announced plans Friday to relinquish federal government control over the administration of the Internet, a move that pleased international critics but alarmed some business leaders and others who rely on the smooth functioning of the Web.
Pressure to let go of the final vestiges of U.S. authority over the system of Web addresses and domain names that organize the Internet has been building for more than a decade and was supercharged by the backlash last year to revelations about National Security Agency surveillance.

More leftist utopian bullshite. Obama dreams of a world without borders where everyone plays the same game with openness and fairness. Too bad there's a little thing called reality that dirties up their rose-colored glasses.
I really wish we would stop capitulating to a phantom standard of "international norms."

Once they control the Internet...they control it all...business, industry, banks, institutes, and private citizens.

It's about giving the loons something to bitch about.

I know, right. It would be much more productive if he masturbated to porn instead of just watching it.

We are ceding direct oversight of ICANN. All of these stories are hyperbolic nonsense.

Obama gave away our space program and now is giving away our control of the internet? As much as I hate the NSA watching what I do, I can only imagine what would happen with a "United Nations" type group in control.

There are still legtimate concerns about censorship. Mix that in with the fact that U.S. only appears to be coughing up oversight responsibility in direct response to revelations about NSA surveillance practices, plus the two largest nations pushing for this aren't necessarily bastions of freedom and self-expression. Sure, it's primarily web domain-name registration, but this decision is still in direct conflict with the U.S. prior position in which it expressed concern about free speech suppression... WSJ says regarding prior global attempts to wrest control of this from the U.S.
quote:
In recent years U.S. policy makers have pushed back against calls from nations including China and Russia for the U.N. and ITU to have a greater role in overseeing the structure of the Web. U.S. officials have previously argued that such an arrangement would lead to the repression of free speech and the Balkanization of the Internet.
I still think the risk for censorship and mismanagement will be significantly greater. This kind of move would only happen under this current administration which clearly values imagined global fairness/equality over common sense and our national welfare (which historically is usually also in the best interest of the global community, at least those who value freedom highly).

expect a global internet tax in the near future in order to "help" undeveloped countries.
