Why exactly wont we honor the Crimean referendum?

I mean, if the people in Crimea do not want to be part of the Ukraine, why exactly should they have to be?

Can we make up our f'n mind as to whether we believe in people's right to self determination or not? And really. WE are calling the vote illegal? How exactly was our nation formed again??

It's not a true referendum. You can vote "yes," for immediate unification with Russia, or "yes," for the terms of the 1991 constitution, which is a slower path, but also leads to Russian unification. "No" is not on the ballot.

Plus there's the thing about Russia holding a referendum in a sovereign nation.

you forgot the part "while under foreign military occupation".

If Putin was sincere about protecting people, he would appeal for an international peace-keeping force instead of his own military.

And Russian troops will probably be overseeing the actual voting. Just like how they occupied the Crimean Legislature when it voted for this referendum.

So you think a country can take over a portion of another country, force a separation vote & it's all good?

Gotcha.

That said. Is there any indication that reunification isn't popular in Crimea?

Meh. We've played the "help Americans" card a few times in my adult lifetime too.

And, I mean. There must be a reason Russia hasn't even had to fire a shot. The Crimeans don't seem terribly pissed.

I claim no expertise on the Ukraine and Crimea but, it appears that Crimea is mostly ethnic Russian and it aint like WE haven't played the "help Americans" card. See Panama.........Grenada.

I mean yeah. Putin is taking advantage but, the Crimeans don't seem very pissed. Are they even protesting?

Have you seen what happens to protesters in Putin's Russia? Hell they are deporting foreigners over speeding tickets. Putin has gone full Neanderthal.

OK. So. Are we of the opinions that the Crimeans in all actuality would prefer to stay in the Ukraine?

And. OK. So, you say that they'd be afraid to protest if they wanted to. Fair enough. But, do they want to? Or, since most of them are Russian, are they in fact happy to not be part of the Ukraine?

I mean, it would helpful to know or at least have a good idea to the answers to these questions in my view.

If I had to guess, I'd say the people of Crimea are sick and tired of the corrupt government of Kyiv, and want no part of the corrupt government in Moscow.

That's actually a pretty good answer considering that Russian & Ukraine are two of the most corrupted nations on earth. The Mafia couldn't rig the system better than these two.

I would be extremely skeptical of any news coming out of the Crimea. I can't imagine that free speech and freedom of the non-state controlled media is in effect.

Any referendum to join another country why under military occupation by said country is completely illegitimate. Not to mention, I can almost assure you that plenty of people in Crimea do not want any part of Russia.

I'd wager that if given the choice, Crimeans would probably vote to be an independent country.
