Dear Leader pushing to change rules re: Overtime

Yet again ... once any rules come down ... in the end, I bet it will only end up hurting the very people he acts like he is the Santa Claus Champion for.

I wonder if he will also change the rules such that salaried personnel who don't work 40 hours in a week ... can therefore be paid less?

FIFY

Honestly, much of his leadership (sadly) has that tone and tenor.

Damn - I hope he makes it retroactive.

I could use some of the 35 years of OT I put in during my career.

lump sum payment would be fine.

I never have understood overtime pay. If you are getting paid by the hour why is the 41st hour any different than the 39th hour of the work week?

I find extremely curious the notion that, the only thing that is apparently holding many people back from getting paid enough to be well off is lack of legislation mandating it happen.

Poof, you're rich!

Mark my words ... this will hurt people.

It will hurt the guy who may need 55 hours a week to get all his work done because although he may be loyal, dedicated, etc. ... perhaps he is not the sharpest stick ... and then his employer says ... "Get it done in 40 ... or else."

There is a lot of overhead built into a 40hr work week. So it's actually cheaper for a company to have someone work overtime than hire another worker. So you give the employee extra money as an incentive to work more hours. Same with weekend pay and holiday pay. Work is not different but there is less supply of workers willing to work those times.

Punishment for the employer by not living up to the 40 hour work week. Otherwise, you would be working maybe 60 hours per week. I've worked jobs, a long time ago, that didn't pay ot. Very menial jobs at the least but I had the option to quit. Of course if he had paid me like some athletes get paid then I would probably still be there working whatever hours he wanted me to.

Punishment? For an arbitrarily established standard? Really?

I thought the whole point of a salaried employee is that they get paid the same no matter how many hours worked. Why not just put everyone by the hour if you are going to mandate overtime pay for salaried employees.

For lack of a better word, yes. The poster wanted to know why one should get $30 an hour for working 41 hours as opposed to getting $20 for working 2 hours less.

What would you call it? I'm open for suggestions.

Here's a question for you salaried workers. How are you compensated for ot and how is your ot determined? I'm was assuming that willthezombie was talking about hourly wage jobs.

Yeah right overtime really killed the economy when it was first introduced.

Change them? What rules prohibit that currently?

Because we have a 40 hour work week in the U.S.

Negotiated rate. I agree that the 40hrs is a bit arbitrary. But it's an agreed to model that allows employers and employees easily compare wage opportunities.

"Salary" means salary. Means you get paid the same whether you work 50 hours or 30 hours.

Your boy Obama says that is not fair and that a salaried worker that works 50 hours ... needs to get more ... i.e. overtime, even though on salary.

So ... have to assume that Obama then wants it to not be fair for the employer ... such that if salaried employee only works 30 hours in a given week ... then his pay for that week should be deducted. Correct?

I see what Obama is trying to do ... and, yeah ... it would really suck to work 60 hrs a week for $25K ... but, obviously some folks are fine with it, otherwise they would quit, renegotiate, get a better job, etc.

Not really sure why the President of the United States needs to be involved here.

We don't get OT at my company, but we do have an efficiency bonus system. Essentially we track our time through a billing system because we are a consulting firm.

Each quarter our timeslips are evaluated, and we have to be billable at least 80% of the time to receive a bonus. This is supposed to encourage you to do more billable work if you get bogged down with a lot of invoicing and other work that is not billable.

Unfortunately those that do most of their work outside the office tend to easily get much better bonuses simply because they don't get tasked with handling the administrative crap.

Some folks will work from home and underestimate the actual time worked.
