In the internet-age of football, we all have heard claims that a league is too polarised, that a league is a two-way race, or that there are an elite few that have financial dominance over the rest. The word that comes up is usually “competitiveness”. But what is “competitiveness“? In league competition, competitiveness measures the parity between teams which allows for a more varied league standing. More competitors leads to a greater degree of competitiveness; something that must be remembered is that there is not only competition for a title. I have looked at the league standings of the past 10 seasons from 2004-2005 until 2013-2014 in order to generate a relatively accurate view on competition in Europe’s top 4 leagues — La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga, and Serie A.

I have looked at 10 different criteria:

# of champions
# of second-placed teams
# of third-placed teams
# of fourth-placed teams
# of fifth-placed teams
Average point differential between 1st-2nd
Average point differential between 1st-3rd
Average point differential between 1st-4th (to assess competitiveness between the “top four”)
Average point differential between 5th-10th (to assess competitiveness from mid-table to UEFA competition)
Average point differential 12th-18th for the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and 11th-16th for the Bundesliga (to assess competitiveness from mid-table to relegation)

quote:

# OF CHAMPIONS IN EACH LEAGUE SINCE 2004-05
Bundesliga 4
Premier League 3
Serie A 3
La Liga 2

quote:

# OF SECOND-PLACED TEAMS IN EACH LEAGUE SINCE 2004-05
Bundesliga 5
Premier League 5
Serie A 5
La Liga 3

quote:

# OF THIRD-PLACED TEAMS IN EACH LEAGUE SINCE 2004-05
Bundesliga 6
Serie A 6
La Liga 5
Premier League 5

quote:

So there we have it. The true difference between the league positions signifies how tight the races are for these positions, demonstrating the competitiveness of each league. Not only can you assess how tight the title races are through this data, you can see how close mid-table and relegation-threatened sides are through each season. If you juxtapose the tables together, you will usually be able to see a correlation between the variety of teams in league positions alongside the league’s average point differential. In terms of average point differential, in order it would have to be: Bundesliga, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A — giving an equal weight to each table.

Overall, the Bundesliga has been the most competitive league in European football over the past 10 seasons.

There's more criteria in the link. Thought you guys might like this

the BL was kind of a shite show for a little while. bayern is just all-time world class right now and ironically, changing the "competitive" paradigm

people just accept the lack of parity in la liga/EPL b/c it's been that way for a while

Does not say anything about the actual quality of football bring played since there is no cross analysis between leagues.

I don't find any of this to be eye opening. And Bayern is about to skew those stats big time for the foreseeable future.

that is interesting. though if the same 10 years study were redone after this year, the margins are so close, the BL probably wouldn't be

historically, that's very useful for debunking bs opinion. looking forward ( ), in the short term future, the EPL should be the most competitive at the top. BL looks the least likely, in the short term, to be competitive in the sense of title-winners.

I find Bundesliga and Serie A to be the most entertaining.

The quality of play this year is probably the highest in La Liga since they have 3 of probably the best 5 or 6 teams in Europe.

Yeah five years from now if we were to do this same analysis you would see the Bundesliga at the bottom, I'm pretty sure.

Why are these part of it? If 2-5 are dross, does it make the league better if that dross shuffles its position regularly?

You can argue I guess which league is the best, but of the 4 major leagues the PL is easily the most competitive. It's not even really close.

Yeah, that oligarchs funded two average clubs in Man City and Chelsea bumped up the number of higher level clubs bumped the EPL top of the table up. The EPL's openness to foreign owners (along with the English language) has been a massive boon for international exposure even if it's taken something away from the English authenticity of the league.

However, the reason the EPL is so competitive at the top this year has a little to do with the EPL not having any of the best 5 teams in Europe this season as well.

This year, I'd say the battle for 1st in La Liga is down to only three teams but they are probably all three among the best five in Europe on form this season.

I'm not sure any neutral soccer fan would choose to watch Chelsea vs Liverpool over Real vs Atlético this season.

Plus the Premier League looks like it might be down to Chelsea vs Manchester City.

I'm not a neutral fan but I would still chose the latter.

Damn those two horse title races! ::takeseasypotshotatbundesligaforbeingaoneteamleague::

I would say Liverpool and Arsenal still have slim shots at it. Slim, but still possible.

A team within 4 points of the leaders with 10 games to play certainly has a shot.

You picked arguably the most boring team on the continent
(not at all meant as an insult)

I would choose the latter in a heartbeat also.

I had a long post about the Bundesliga. Erased it bc I don't care enough.

Bayern 20 points clear
Bayern Goal differential - 61
Dortmund goals scored - 55

It seems like the only defense 1B fans have for the current state of things in the league is saying, "But but but it's been competitive over the last ten years!"

Yeah, true. But now? Having a GD like that and basically clinching the league this early means it's not very competitive.

The league is run super well. And the clubs are much more financially responsible than other leagues, which is appealing in itself. Plus the styles are fun to watch, and the young talent is fricking great.

Only problem is the league as a whole isn't too entertaining this season, and doesn't look like it will be for a while.

I chose number 1 vs number 2 in both leagues.

You have to admit the LFCvsChelsea is still an arbitrary matchup compared to anything RM related.

If you are a soccer fan, you will watch RMvAtletico just for the rivalry alone, even though the fixture will make your eyes bleed. If you barely know anything about the game, you will still likely watch RMvBarcelona over any other club match in the world.
