Have you ever suddenly realized that you have misinterpreted lyrics?

I was listening to We're an American Band by Grand Funk and it got to the lyric "the hotel detective he was outta sight."

All these years, I thought that they meant that the hotel detective was a cool guy and would let them get away with whatever they wanted since they were a rock band.

I just realized that they meant he was not around at the time.

duh.

When I was comin' down here, "The Night
the Lights Went Out in Georgia" came on. I ain't heard that song
since it was big. But when it was big, I must've heard it
a million-trillion frickin' times. But this is the first time
I ever realized... that the girl singin' the song
is the one who shot Andy

Blackbird by The Beatles. Years later realized it as an ode to MLK.

I've had that happen several times, but I can't think of a specific example. When I looked up the lyrics to Gimme Shelter I was way off, though.

i was thinking for like decades that "let it be" meant to leave it alone, not worry about it--i know, i know, but it's one of those first impression so you never rethink it thingie.

So what was the revelation?

Rosie...

She was standing at the load-in
When the trucks rolled up
She was sniffing all around
Like a half grown female pup
She wasn't hard to talk to
Looked like she had nowhere to go
So I gave her my pass
So she could get in and see the show

Well I sat her down right next to me
And I got her a beer
While I mixed that sound on stage
So the band could hear
The more I watched her watch them play
The less I could think of to say
And when they walked off stage
The drummer swept that girl away

But Rosie you're all right - you wear my ring
When you hold me tight - Rosie that's my thing
When you turn out the light - I've got to hand it to me
Looks like it's me and you again tonight Rosie

Well I guess I might have known from the start
She'd come for a star
Might have told my imagination not to run too far
Of all the times that I've been burned
By now you'd think I'd have learned
That it's who you look like
Not who you are

But Rosie you're all right - you wear my ring
When you hold me tight - Rosie that's my thing
When you turn out the light - I've got to hand it to me
Looks like it's me and you again tonight Rosie

It took Jackson Browne saying this song isn't about what you think it's about for me to get it.

let it be means to accept His will. as when gabriel told mary she'd be carrying Jesus: I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.

that is, unless i had it right the first time

These "moments of clarity" happen to me often, and when that occurs, I usually tell myself, "frick it. I like my lyrics better anyhow," and I continue to sing it incorrectly because I'm hardcore like that.

You didn't know that Vickie Lawrence was the one who shot Andy?

I'm thinking Jeremiah wasn't in fact a bullfrog.

Don't you dare suggest otherwise. As a five-year-old singing that song at the top of my lungs, I knew for a FACT that Jeremiah was a bullfrog. I still know it to this day. I don't care if Hoyt Axton and Three Dog Night try to convince me at gunpoint. I'll never believe anything contrary.
