Are they pleasant to deal with? Surprise you with hidden fees for household checking accounts?
They have a lot of branch locations in my area and free checking if you meet certain requirements. I was wondering if they are frustrating or if people had bad experiences with them. I'm switching from Regions and looking for alternatives.

I had a SunTrust account and closed it in favor of Capital One 360 (was ING Direct).
If you're looking for pleasant then you might be better off with a credit union or smaller bank. They have a zillion branches in the southeast so you'll find friendly branch folk and not-so-friendly.
Lots of fees just like any other large bank and don't expect any of the above mentioned branch folk, friendly or otherwise, to help you out in that area. Also, that free checking might not be free for long (banks are trying to ease away from this).
IMO, large banks are only advantageous if you are bringing a lot of relationships (loans, investments, insurance, etc). That's when you get treated well. If you're just opening a checking and maybe a savings, expect to be customer 48284zy29kw just like anywhere else.

+1 for smaller banks. I've had accounts at larger banks, but I settled on a small local bank with only 5 branches. When I call the bank, I don't have to press 1 for English and navigate an endless menu. I get a person and many in the branch I go to most frequently know me by name. My checking account does have a monthly fee (< $10) but I don't mind it because I like doing business with them.

There is a smaller outfit based in my town. I'll have to check them out. They appear to offer the same services as Regions......they have low fees that are waived completely for requirements that we'll easily meet. Looks like they do the same type of lending as well.
Unfortunately there are no CapOne bank branches nearby, and Iberiabank's nearest branch isn't very convenient.

Yeah definitely look around. If you just want a deposit/checking relationship that can be had at nearly every bank, and smaller banks just do a better job at customer service.
Capital One 360 is actually 100% online and is separate from brick-and-mortar Capital One...I actually can't do anything in a branch. But if you can do without branches it is fantastic and the customer service is excellent. No fees, not even for overdrafts.

I'm expecting some fees these days with all banks....and if not now, in the fairly near future.
I took your advice (which was similar to what a family member suggested) and found a smaller bank that we like. They have a good fee schedule and seem to be growing pretty quickly in the area. They have a couple of branches near us that are convenient.
