My wife and I are thinking about taking a vacation to D.C. this summer. I wanted to get some tips and inside scoop on things to do/places to avoid. We were talking about also taking half a day to check out Baltimore because I'd like to catch Orioles game.

Just plan for a whole day if you really want to see anything.

Take a few hours and go to "The Newseum"... definitely worth it.

Also, walking around the Tidal Basin to visit the monuments is also worthwhile.

In B'more, check out Fells Point and Canton areas. Instead of an Orioles game, I suggest the Nationals in Navy Yard (DC).

Oh, and stay out of NE DC...

How long do you plan to stay in DC?

Skip the Holocaust Museum. It will put a bummer in your trip.

Definitely go to Mt. Vernon.

Skip national aquarium.

Do any Smithsonian's you are interested in. Lincoln monument, etc..

4 days, with possibly one spent in Baltimore. Or should we just skip Baltimore and spend all the days in D.C.?

I'd skip Baltimore and do Mt. Vernon (and maybe Annapolis) instead

I like Baltimore (and Camden Yard is a great stadium), but if you're talking 4 days, stay in D.C. You need to see Arlington Cemetery and the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns; the view from the Kennedy graves is remarkable (right below Arlington House); see the Iwo Jima Monument while you're there; walk the mall; visit memorials (Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington Monument -- though you may not want to wait in line to go up); a lot of the Smithsonian is right on the mall and you could spend days there.

A good trip outside of the city is to George Washington's Mount Vernon. If you are into Civil War history, Manassas, Fredericksburg; Spotsylvania; the Wilderness is about 1 1/2 hours away.

I've lived here for 40 years and still haven't seen everything.

I went in June 2008

I recommend getting a tour bus. If you try to walk everywhere you will wear out quickly. Hell we were worn out after a day touring around on a tour bus. But with the bus we got to see all the major sights.

It rained and was humid the day we used the tour bus.

Pick a museum out of the Smithsonian group and explore it in depth instead of dashing through them all, glancing at a lot of things, and not seeing anything.

Forgot to mention my wife will be 19 weeks pregnant so I'm sure that'll play a huge part of what we will end up doing.

No pun intended

it'll probably be hot, but there's an outside chance you'll get some reasonable weather. I'd start with a DC duck tour, they're different and pretty good. It'll let you see a lot of the major monuments/sights at one time. She'll probably want to hit the museums, which are all pretty good. Do some research on them and figure out what you want to see. Natural History, Native Americans, Air & Space are some of my favorites. (The Native American museum has the best lunch of all the museums). If you can, call your congressman and try to line up a personal tour of the capitol.

Georgetown is a cab ride away and has a lot of nice shops and places to eat/drink. It's a good way to kill an afternoon.

National Cathedral is awe inspiring, worth a trip if you like looking at older churches/architecture.

If you and your wife are looking for a night out and a great dinner, I highly and I mean HIGHLY recommend "BLT". It is without a doubt the best steakhouse I've ever eaten at in any city.
