OT etiquette for cashiers servicing 2 lanes

Some places, cashiers have two lanes, one on either side where they checkout the customers on an alternating basis from each lane. In a cafeteria and such, I always look for the cashier with the shortest line. Sometimes I'll end up in an 'empty' lane but there are two people on the other side of the cashier who were already there.
Do you
(1) Take advantage of the fact there's nobody ahead of you in your particular lane, pay first and go your merry way?
(2) Indicate to the cashier that the others got there first and insist he/she attend to them
(3) Let the cashier make the call.
I couldn't find a picture to support my scenario.

These are the type of people who frick up the self check out areas. They can't figure out to form one line and average out everyone's wait time.

Sometimes it's just bad timing/decision making. It happens.

Some lady yelled at me for going to the shortest line at Canes. Apparently there was just one line and the next person was just going to the next available register.
