Sam Shields got paid by GB

Packers re-signed CB Sam Shields to a four-year, $39 million contract. The deal includes a $12.5 million signing bonus and puts Shields among the top-three cornerbacks in the league in average annual salary. Shields will receive a total compensation of $15 million for 2014 and $21 million through his first two seasons. It's a massive sum of money for a player that's struggled with injuries each of the last two years, is a liability in run defense, and has been an inconsistent cover man. Green Bay GM Ted Thompson is betting on Shields' improvement to continue, as he played wide receiver in college and is only 26 years old. Shields will return as the No. 1 corner in a deep Packers secondary that includes Tramon Williams, Casey Hayward, and Davon House.
What effect does this have on our ability to find an FA corner?
Thoughts?

It definitely sets the CB market high this offseason. I like Shields but I don't believe that he is a top 3 CB. Means that for a quality corner we will probably have to add through the draft.

I'd hate to see how much Sherman will get.

If this is all true, their defense is going to get lit up like a Christmas tree this year.

I've been watching this dude for a while. I don't really understand the hate... Dude can play. Period. Ted Thompson (notorious cheapskate) must think so too.
Moving on...
We need to draft a CB. I wouldn't pay that.

If we go CB...In the first I wouldn't mind Verrett...Later in the draft we could get Watkins(UF),Exum(VT),Jean-Baptiste(Neb),Hall(Vanderbilt),Purifoy(UF),and McGill(Utah)...Just to name a few...Maybe even Roby in the 1st round. His 12' seasons was phenomenal but his play fell off last year..Still has 3 picks though.

See this is one I find most shocking and makes me confused about how the market will play out.
Brent Grimes, one of the best corners last year, only got $8m per. I know he's older and that's a factor though.
And originally the Packers said they wouldn't go higher than $5.5-6m on Shields, relating his worth to what a Bears'(I think) corner got.
So it's really surprising to see that less than a week later he received $9.75m per(obviously because the talking period opened yesterday and someone was willing to overbid, but the Packers usually don't overpay).
So it really depends on the specific corner and whether each team views them as a 1, 2, or nickel(it only takes 1 team to overbid).
I still think we try to get a corner, but if the market goes crazy we may just stand pat. And then I would bitch like I did when we decided to just roll with Brown at LT last year.
