So, when did pickup trucks become the status symbol?

I seem to remember a time when there were not nearly the number of pickups on the roads, except for when you ventured into the country. Now, it seems trucks are in almost every driveway, and the bigger the truck the bigger the man I suppose. What gives? When did this become the symbol of status, manhood, or fashion?

They've always been the (no message) as far as I've been concerned.

Unless the (no message) was one of compensation.

When they started putting three and four doors on trucks in the mid 90's

Nashville collaborated with the pickup truck industry to spawn this movement. You will also notice a sharp incline in interest in dirt roads, Murica, 6-packs, my baby, fishin holes, and ole George Jones.

It's not about status as much as it is about utility.

I got tired of cramming a bunch of shite in the back of a civic or jeep everytime I went to the store. Also kayaks, boats, etc are tough to haul on a jeep.

Do you think that is what caused it to evolve into the monster 4x4 truck craze where you need a step ladder to get in, or the big Super Duty thing? Seems to be getting a little out of control, especially with those that have pipes on them that sound like an 18 wheeler passing you by.

But how did we make it before hand when people arguably had less money and had to probably do more stuff themselves?

I don't know what you mean by this question. It's not like we're comparing cell phones to using payphones back in the day. Guys just got tired of borrowing and/or renting a truck when they needed space to haul something. And as another poster said, the extended cab makes it to where it's basically like an SUV on the inside.

I'll go so far as to say every father should have a truck. If not as his regular vehicle, as a spare vehicle.

When they stopped riding like trucks, and started having a more comfortable ride than most cars

I don't remember any of that being the case growing up, except when people moved perhaps, then it was more of who do we know that actually has a truck we might borrow for the day.

But what if they don't like driving a truck?

Unless you're a working man who needs it to carry the tools of his trade, it's just an affectation and a rather pathetic one at that.

They actually became real popular after Urban Cowboy hit the theaters. At least that's what my Pops told me.

I enjoy a pretty comfortable ride myself. I'd say much more comfy than the trucks I have ridden in. Handles a hell of a lot better too. Better gas mileage to boot.

So you're saying that driving a truck is pathetic?
