Got about 300yds of driveway which needs replacement limestone. Bear Ind. suggested #57 stone. Can anyone recommend an alternative size? Just want to know my options and Bear wasn't real helpful. TIA.

57 stone is ideal but it's expensive.

Soil type?

Look up B-base or bahama base

It all depends on if the rock is going to sink into the ground. You might need a layer of geo textile fiber before you spend money on rock every two years

I'm basically overlaying an existing limestone driveway. No sinking, just a few holes here and there and existing limestone is getting thin. I'll check out the B base. Thanks.

Pave it. You'll save money and aggravation in the long run. Because you're always going to be adding limestone to it. We've been doing it for years and years. Luckily there's 2 of us on the same driveway so we can split the cost but there's deep holes in it now so it won't be long until we have to put more down.

Ask to make sure you're getting crushed granite. That is what you need.

Crushed granite is probably what you call limestone. Not sure how people got misled.

Call any dirt trucking service and they will haul you a load.

you arent getting "crushed granite" unless you live in the mountains.

#57 limestone is most common...its the typical grey stone you see everywhere. it stays loose for a while but will eventually lock in after you drive on it (a bunch). you other limestone alternative is #610, which has alot more fines in it (dust), which helps it compact faster, but is much dirtier and not as pleasing to the eye

i just re-did my driveway with slag (byproduct of making steel), recommend you look it to it. its much cheaper than limestone depending on where you live, and will last longer

What about the crushed concrete? How does that do compared to the price of limestone?

crushed concrete CAN be cheaper, depending on how far the crusher is from your property. alot of times the crushers have orders for it before they even crush it

i would not put that on my driveway though
its not the best wearing surface as the fines in it can make a mess when wet...it gets all over your vehicle until it is well compacted, and even then it can be a mess. it is better used as a compacted subsurface

Looked into concrete and asphalt and they're both too expensive at this point.

I'll check into crushed concrete.

slag is the impurities separated from the ores
depending on the mill and the ore, its mostly oxides of silicon, magnesium, calcium, etc

mine came from the mill in convent, i think

Crush run, vibrated in, is what you want. It has a large % of fines, so it will compact like concrete. It's a different product than 57.

They have 57 Grey and 57 White. The white is cheaper by about $3.00 per ton. Find out which 57 they have. What price did they give you for the 57?

They have their own pit or will they be getting it from somewhere else? I ask because you can call different trucking companies where you are and they might get a better price on the material. If you were around New Orleans, I could give you prices.
