Do any of you guys ever target offshore species (such as mahi, tuna or even billfish) in the gulf? If so, what sort of techniques and set ups do you use? Thanks

I have always thought it would be interesting, when chumming for tuna, or following a shrimp boat, to use a 12 wt set up for yellowfin.

I have fished weed lines a time or two with a 9 wt for mahi and pulled a few chickens, but nothing to write home about.

Tripletail and cobia would be fun and pretty easy I would think as well around structure.

If one were inclined to have one's name in the record books, this seems like the easiest method in which to do it.

Caught a few mahi along a weed line a few summers ago with an 8 wt. I needed a heavier rod though. Didn't know I was going offshore so I didn't have a sinking line, heavier rod or bigger flies with me. I caught the fish on size 2 Clousers. Without a sinking line, I couldn't get the fly down to the bigger mahi.

I am surprised that there is not a boutique guide service that focuses on fly fishing the gulf for near and offshore fish including the big pelagics.

I guess the market is not large enough or sustainable.

I have caught a few dozen small chicken dolphin (Mahi) with my bass rod. 5 weight. Used a chartreuse clouser. Brought it once for fun on an amberjack trip. We spent half the afternoon taking turns. Easily could have caught them until there was none left. My only story of offshore fly fishing. It was one of those days where nothing went right and some unexpected saved the day. I think we finished with two tunas two ajs and 10 nice mahi

Look at big arbor reels, sink line and use 65lb braided backing. Put as much backing as you can. There are some 15 wt 10' rods that have extended butts that help fit a fighting belt. Big plus! Once one hooks up, one has to use the boat to run them down.

I have caught tuna up to 65lbs,Dorado, AJ's, red snapper, kingfish and Lings. Really never tried for a billfish, but did look into it a bunch. To do that, one just teases them up and then one drops a fly back for the swap.

Met that guy probably 12 years ago when there was an Orvis Shop on Corporate Blvd in Baton Rouge. I think that place was called Gulf Coast Outfitters or something like that.

This Saturday the Red Stick Fly Fishers of Baton Rouge will hold their annual Conclave at the Wildlife and Fisheries’ Waddill facilities off Flannery Road. It will run from 0830 to around 1600 and will feature all sorts of fly-fishing related odds and ends, including fly-tying and casting instruction, exhibits, raffles, and seminars – one of which I will present on Offshore Fly Fishing. It is open to the public, free of charge, and if you don’t have a good time there – as well as learn something constructive, then shame on you!

From Pete's blog. You're in luck

Well, dammit, I will not be able to make it to town this weekend. That would be fantastic!
