You're gonna pay a bunch for one. Most agencies have encrypted channels and are on 800 or 700 band channels. Around 2005 when we went to them a scanner was around 1000 dollars.

There are hand-held ones for under $200.00 at Radio Shack.

Scanners are becoming useless. Local police forces are encrypting their radio signals now to keep nosey people like your dad from listening.

Some police departments use channel hopping radios. Very few use actual encryption. And even if they do, it can be overcome. Out here in the boonies, most Law Enforcement agencies still use basic radios on open frequencies. I can monitor them on my HAM radio like the Baofeng.

Nosey? Interesting choice of words. Do you have a problem with the public knowing what its servants are doing?

I'll just end this with the creed of Amateur Radio - "In God We Trust, All Others, We Monitor."

No, but the police have a problem with it. 90% of the police forces in the south will have encryption before the decade is over.

BRPD got pissed when people were starting threads about what they'd hear on the 5-0 radio app so they got the company to remove them from their app. then, people started listening to a web player that somebody with a scanner was broadcasting.

BRPD spent $1m to encrypt all their radios. (not sure if they worked out the kinks yet because the signal has to be perfect for it to work). Jefferson, Plaquimines, St Bernard, and plenty of other parishes recently blocked access to their dispatch channels.

I'm not sure about EBRSO. I think it might just be digitally trunked - which just requires a scanner that can handle that.
