With the exception of the super signature floats it seems the floats keep getting worse and worse....super krewes included. I miss the days of animation and more contour to the floats....a lot of these are just too boxy.

Depends on the parade. I was very impressed with Orpheus last night. Pretty elaborate.

I can't imagine you would notice the difference over the course of just a couple of years. Don't a lot of these floats just kind of passed around among a few krewes each year?

No way. As someone said, Orpheus was terrific, as were Krewe D'Etat and Hermes, among others.

Yeah and it's pretty obvious which ones do that.

Maybe it's always been like that and as you get older you tend to notice things like that instead of just remembering the good looking floats. That's how I feel anyway. I've never really been a fan of mardi gras though.

Floats can be 20-30 years old in some cases. Like classic cars, the chassis remains but the exterior changes out.

Our floats are repainted and get new props and decorations yearly outside of a quarter or so which are the same each year (royalty, board officers, court, and two big "groups" in our Krewe), they all get redone annually.

We do rent our floats out to be used in other parades but they are designed specifically for our theme each year as a krewe.

Mid City still uses the foil floats, which is tradition for them but they dont look great.

Theajority of Krewes with their own flowts have them whited out a few days after Mardi Gras. Which means they are completly painted white and the new paint scheme is started.

The actually shape and achitecture is kept the same for the most part.

I can tell you that Endymion spent a great deal of money installing LED lighting on all the floats...

i know exactly what you mean though, when i was a teenager living on the westbank, floats would start with choctaw, and then go through alla, grela, and end up with posideon (possibly the cheapest krewe in all of mardi gras)

I thought the same thing, but that was just from the few I saw on a TV, I have not been to a parade in years, so my opinion is made from a very limited sample

You can have all that tricked up stuff. I think Proteus riding on the same chassis that were being used in the 1880's is awesome. It's history rolling by. Besides, they do some beautiful stuff with those old floats.

I do love the old floats and think the two of the best processions floats wise was Hermes and Orpheus. One of the best uses of animation was d'etats skeleton float. I just remember endymion/Bacchus having larger props/more animation on theirs.

Rex also had a very beautiful procession.
