Better mower engine option...Briggs or Kohler?

About to buy a riding lawnmower and was wondering between these two engines, which one would be the better option. It would be either a Briggs Platinum V-Twin or a Kohler 7000 series V-Twin. I don't need a zero turn and the mowers with the Kawasaki engines are just a little too pricey for me. Anybody have experience with ether of these engines on a mower? I know these are relatively newer engine models, so I'm just trying to get some input. Thanks!

Kohlers are nice.

Won't be your case, but I heard the Kawasakis are not good for heavy, long periods of use. Engines get too hot and melt

Which is why you see a lot of them with the cool air intake now.

Heard the Kohler Courage is complete JUNK...that's why I'm staying away from that one.

I've got a 10 hear old Briggs that cut an average of 4 acres a week during cutting season. Don't know why they get slammed so much.

Mine is on a Husqvarna I bought from lowes in 2004. Like I said, cut 4 acres of grass for 10 years. If I washed and waxed it I could probably park it in front of lowes again and nobody would know.

Briggs is really the best small engine IMO

All of my generators, pressure washers, etc have Briggs engines and they flatout last with very little issues.

I have built whole houses using my generators and never have had any issues. My two big generators are about 10 years old now, and outside of basic maintenance, they have never been worked on. I put generators through hell too.

Been having a Briggs for 5+ years and it's still kicking arse one piece of grass at a time

Talking about generators and craftsman I have a craftsman generator left by my grandfather that pushing 30 years. Had gas in it from hurricane 2 years ago and cranked right up during ice storm 2 weeks ago.

With a Briggs.

The Kohler Command and Command Pro are great engines -- high-quality and include better bearings, hydraulic lifters, oil coolers, etc. Their Courage (economical) line carried some of these features but had a number of quality issues. That's probably why you are seeing the "7000 series" as they ended up going with a new design. (NOTE: My lawn mower has a Courage engine and it's seen 6 years with no problems)

In the past, Briggs' higher CI engines left a lot to be desired but I've heard they've made great strides in recent years.

I think lots of folks will say kohler, but they are typically comparing a new kohler with an old school briggs...

my experience is that they are about equal now that the points have been replaced with electronic ignition....

I have had a mower with a briggs 22hp v-twin for over ten years now and it has never failed to start...

just burn non-ethanol gas (or use an additive) and change the oil regularly and either one will last a hell of a long time with no trouble at all...

With an occasional oil change and non-ethanol gas either engine will outlast the thin cheap Chinese steel deck.

Either engine will be fine with non eth gas and proper maintenance... a few years back Briggs had some issues on some models and Kohler got the upper hand, but both are fine choices now as long as you follow the recommended servicing....

My last Craftsman/Briggs & Stratton was still running perfectly after 23 years. And honestly, I really didn't take particularly good care of it, either. Never changed the oil. Never winterized it. Think I may have replaced the air filter once in all that time.

The housing cracked by the discharge chute, and I was ready to upgrade to a self-propelled, so I replaced it with another Craftsman/Briggs. I highly recommend Craftsman/Briggs.

I have an aluminum deck Toro with a 6.5 HP B&S GTS. GTS is garunteed to start. The dealer I bougjt it from told me if it doesn't starr in the second pull to call and he would come pick it up to service it. I've never had to call him and its been 7 years.
