We have a pretty large back yard and have been in the house almost 3 years and haven't done anything with it yet. We are debating putting in a pool with possibly an outdoor kitchen area. We have a one year old daughter so we would probably use it quite a bit, but our neighborhood has some awesome pools available to use also.

Is the initial cost worth it? Pretty sure we will be in the house for awhile, but the time houses are on the market in our area are very short (cinco ranch).

I know a lot of people who had a pool and then said they would never get one again. It's a lot of work.

I think I'd eventually want one though.

Pools will not add value to your home when you try to sell it.

Let me know who you use for install. We are in the market too. Seven Meadows

Ours comes every other week. Never thought about installing one. What do you use? Cement? How would they get anything accomplished?

If you have an awesome pool in your neighborhood, just do the outdoor kitchen which sounds pretty cool. A pool is a lot of upkeep and a lot of money.

Will likely hurt your home value, not help. You install a pool because you want one, no other reason.

He doesn't swim often. Said electricity bill goes up $200 a month plus chemicals/maintenance.

One thing to keep in mind. When the wife says she will help with the up keep. What she really means is she will let you know when it's getting dirty and to get off your lazy arse and get outside and clean the fricking pool.

Installed one myself 3 years ago electric bill went up about 50 a month. I keep mine open all year. I use troublefreepool.com and only go to a poolstore for mechanical parts now

I purchased a home ten years a ago that had a pool. The pool was not something I was looking for when buying a home, but my wife and I really enjoy it and it is great for entertaining. My pool is gunite construction, and if I were having one installed I would not settle for any other type of construction. As far as maintenance is concerned, I take care of the pool myself, which normally involves cleaning the strainers once or twice a week, vacuuming once a week depending on the seasons and regulating the chemicals. All of this probably amounts to about two hours of my time each week. Hope this helps.

A friend of mine who's in the insurance bidness always says that there are 2 things you absolutely cannot afford from a liability standpoint. First is a swimming pool - second is a large-breed dog. He says the owner of both will almost always lose when an accident occurs involving either.

One of my neighbors has a pool. He says he will gladly give that pool to anyone who can figure out how to dig that sumbitch up and haul it out of his yard.
