Here is the link. All of us have these stories, but it's interesting to read them from an English paper's perspective.

I always enjoy hearing how people (Americans)developed their connection to their European teams.
Personally it was Italy's World Cup victory and a buddy at camp that led me to AC Milan. I hope they show up a against Juventus today

My good friend from Birmingham UK is an Aston Villa supporter, so now that's my team.

It's difficult to be a fan of teams owned by Randy Lerner.

Wife is British, we go visit the in-laws every 6 months or so. My brother in law is the biggest Liverpool supporter alive and it rubbed off. I have been to more matches than most brit's. He conversly is now a Saints fan and pays to watch every game in the UK. The two versions of football do not have to be exclusive of each other. It is a bit odd for people with no association to a team and have never been to a match to be die hard fans though.

What if they go to a match? Then is it ok?

For me, it was watching Arsenal (Thierry Henry) in their run to the Champions League final in 2006. That was the first year I ever watched the Champions League itself and paid any attention to international football with any interest. I just loved the way Arsenal played as a team, and loved watching Henry as a player.

It was probably another year or two that I really started to care how Arsenal did, and now I'm a true Gooner that doesn't miss a game if I can help it (Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Capital One Cup, Emirates Cup, preseason, etc.).

For the record, I've not been able to enjoy what it's like to win a trophy, so I'm desperate for Arsenal to win one soon!

I only watched Henry at the tail end of his Arsenal career (2012 loan spell not withstanding), so I missed The Invicibles season, 1998 & 2002 double seasons, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieria, Sol Campbell, Robert Pires, and also the team's last trophy at the 2005 FA Cup, etc.

Can't wait for Arsenal to be top again as a Gooner myself!

No I am calling my brother in law a brit from liverpool who has been to saints games. Sorry if I hurt anyones feelings perhaps curious would have been a better choice of words than odd. Casual fan is easy to understand, rabid fandom without association from another continent is a bit more difficult for my limited facalties to fathom. Especialy since most are fans of the top of the table.

I get where you're coming from, but I think sport inherently fosters passion and devotion. You can't not get emotionally invested in athletic competition if you watch it frequently. It's what makes it so special.
