Phil Jackson says Lakers dynasty broke up because of Shaq's 'clown role'

BOSTON — As arguably the greatest coach in basketball history, Phil Jackson won 11 championships with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

If anybody would know the differences between those all-time greats, it’s him. In a panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, Jackson shed some light on their work ethics.

“Shaq didn’t work at it,” Jackson said. “Michael was able to succeed despite all kinds of limitations in his game. He couldn’t hit an outside shot. He couldn’t defend. But all of that went away because of his work ethic. Kobe saw that as a pinnacle that he had to reach, and he took it to a whole new level.”

After winning three straight titles with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2000 to 2002, O’Neal and Bryant had a famous falling out, and Jackson pointed to their personalities as a cause.

“Shaq had a clown role he had to play,” he said. “So that was part of the rift.”

O’Neal’s outsized personality made him one of the most popular players in the NBA, but it clashed with Bryant’s serious-minded approach. In the end, Kobe won out.

Shaq blames Kobe for shortening his career. He needed toe surgery and Kobe was calling him out in the media. So he kept playing.

Shaq's clown role was being unstoppable down low during the title years.

Kobe's clown role was shooting airballs for the last shot when winning big time was on the line.

I don't know who you are or why you love Kobe.

But nobody who watched basketball fro 1980 to present would ever take Kobe over Jordan.

It just shows you're a guy trying to play poker in an open forum and don't know the game and don't have the experience.

You're a fraud...a child...unknownknight - nobody cares about someone like you who can't look back 40 years.

You're a Denny's Grand Slam afficiando - you eat shite and think it's the best - because you don't know any better.

You have zero knowledge - you grew up with a crap perspective,

Youtube videos doesn't give you knowledge punk.

God are you clueless.

Just a dumb kid...

You're just a dumb stupid idiot kid...nobody respects you.

The 2002–03 season began with the three-time defending champions getting off to one of their worst starts ever. The team was several games under .500 at 11–19 with their return to the playoffs questionable. O'Neal was sidelined with hallux rigidus, a degenerative arthritis in his toe.[61] O'Neal could have had surgery on his toe early in the summer (which would have allowed him to return to playing sooner), but he decided to wait and have the surgery performed not long before the Lakers' pre-season training camp began. He said, "I got hurt on company time, so I’ll rehab on company time."

Are you referring to 1997 when Kobe was an 18 year old rookie and the Lakers got thumped in 5 by Stockton and Malone?

Seems petty from a guy that embraces "Zen Master" as his nickname. I mean, you can't work on 7'1 325, and I don't think he was ever going to have much touch on free throws with those bear paws. I guess Phil could've just benched him, right?

Anyway, I can't wait for Shaq's shaky-iphone bar video comeback rap.

You're a joke.

Because you don't even have words.

And the history of experience.

Total child newbie...wrapped up in stupid picture responses.

You don't even have a legitimate response.

Clown...You are a clown.

No..I'm referring to his Finals performance post-Shaq...

Against his hated rivals...choking...sulking on the bench...doing nothing.

I'm a Lakers fan...and even I can't defend Kobe in good conscience over Jordan who I hated.

That comparison is ludicrous.

Every Laker fan wished Kobe was Jordan.

Kobe had half the fire and half the will and half the ability and half the gumption.

He shrank from the challenge. We saw it time and time again...and as Laker fans = it pissed us off.

But Kobe was all about scoring in the regular season against nobody...stat monger...and quitting on the bench like he did against the most important series against the Celtics to decide it all - for both franchises...he embarrassed Lakers fans.

Why do people take up Unbeknown Knight causes?

The guy is a troll and fraud.

I'm a real Laker fan and I would never take Kobe and LeBron over Jordan.

Have people gone insane?

Is everyone born after 1990 that insecure?

You child idiots!

I'm a Laker fan and huge Kobe fan. Obviously Jordan > Kobe.

But this:
quote:

Kobe had half the fire.

Is almost as stupid as saying Kobe > Jordan.

The fact that MJ has always been a borderline bad distance shooter has always made his incredible ability as a scorer that much more impressive IMO.

He couldn’t defend.

He's talking about early in Jordan's career. Hence the "it went away with work ethic" part.
