I was young then so I didn't really understand the atmosphere well. Was lsu expected to make that kind of run or was that season a total shock to everyone?

I had a friend before the 01 season say that lsu would make a run in 03. But no, I think lsu started the season ranked around 15

Eta Phil Steele I believe picked lsu to win it all that year in his preseason magazine

Nothing will top that year. Lsu was a total sleeper nationally. Our big wins that regular season were dismissed as flukes. Lau was being dismissed up until the night they won the sec. The entire season media fought over which penis to blow on..OU or USC

One of the only games I went to with my father was the 2003 seccg. That was one of the best experiences of my life.

I think LSU started off ranked #16 maybe? in the AP poll.

LSU had just lost I think 4 of their last 7 games in 2002 when Mauck got injured @UF.

People had high hopes, but NC was a distant one. UGA came into TS for an afternoon game (LSU history sucked at these) ranked #3 in the nation, I believe. Missed FGs, a screen pass, TS as loud as it's ever been, Mauck to Green and fans knew it could be special. The UF loss was disappointing, but just a hiccup. That's the season Ole Miss thought they could win something and Eli fell on his arse.

Favorite season ever.

One man.... Lavalais. Quickest nose guard to ever play at LSU.

It was a surprise, but the talent and potential was known. Before the season, I made a bet with an OU buddy that LSU would win a title before OU did again. how it worked out.

Nice.

That was the season OU was literally touted as one of the best CFB teams ever. Every media outlet ran with it. Unstoppable. Then KSU crushes them in the Big whatever CG. Still get into the BCSCG and Stoops has 4 weeks to prepare for an undeserving LSU team.

I had a feeling that the Tigers could have a great season but I'll put it this way...on October 11th of that year, I watched LSU sleepwalk through a 19 - 7 loss at home against Florida. Right after that, I saw OU beat the life out of Texas to the tune of 65 - 13. Had you told me then that LSU would beat OU to win the National Championship...let's just say that I'd be dead right now, because I would have bet my life otherwise.

Auburn was favored to win the SEC that year.

They went 8-5 and got completely dismantled by LSU...that was fun to see in person.

Huh?

I was speaking of the media. LSU fans were on heels waiting for the final BCS standings. Do you remember?

That was when the Auburn / Tubby hate was at full steam. Auburn had beaten the Tigers pretty good the year before and a lot of their fans were talking major trash and carrying victory cigars into the game. It was 21 - 0 Tigers before the first quarter was over and it really should have ended much worse than 31 - 7. Here's the highlights of that game and as always, thanks to rnolan53 for his great Youtube channel.

Had us as one of his surprise teams, and he reminds EVERY year.
I remember the announcer in the Zona game saying that we were expecting to be good, but it was '04 to look out for. Not sure about the '04 part though.

I remember. I also didn't see how they could choose anyone else. The only other team with an argument I thought was Va Tech but we absolutely trashed them.
