Police chief cites fake news report in legal marijuana hearing

At a Maryland State Senate hearing to discuss decriminalizing marijuana Tuesday, a high-ranking law enforcement official betrayed his total ignorance about marijuana when he claimed that decriminalization would cause a slew of overdoses throughout the state.
From the Capital Gazette:
“The first day of legalization, that’s when Colorado experienced 37 deaths that day from overdose on marijuana,” [Annapolis Police Chief Michael] Pristoop said in testimony at Tuesday’s Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee hearing. “I remember the first day it was decriminalized there were 37 deaths.”
That information is straight from the Daily Currant, a well-known satirical news site, which claimed that Colorado hospitals were overwhelmed with emergency cases caused by marijuana use.

It's amazing the amount of misinformation and lies that law enforcement and politicians will put out there to keep cannabis from being legalized. Law enforcement doesn't want it legalize because they will lose millions of dollars from the DEA that they get for arresting cannabis offenders. Not to mention the money they get from asset forfeiture of those arrested. It's all about the money people.
Here is a link were you can listen to his testimony.

And also a link to the fake story he was quoting.

You knew this would happen eventually. I mean about once a month some internet aficionado comes on here and posts a "Hey guys look a this" Onion story.

Apparently Chief Pristoop didn’t know that marijuana was already being used widely in Colorado, just like in every other state, and that it is impossible to die from a marijuana overdose.
I wish they would stop saying it like this, because its not true. You can overdose, you can die from that overdose, its just extremely hard to actually overdose

Should force his resignation

True. But it would be pretty hard to pull off.

A smoker would theoretically have to consume nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana within about fifteen minutes to induce a lethal response.

He's just toeing the party (LEO) line.
All of them are against it, because of the funding cuts and loss of seized property. Plus, potheads aren't generally violent, unlike those dangerous heroin traffickers.

The boogy man is back
Two men die from Marijuana
The marijuana triggered to health defects.
So is the marijuana the CAUSE of the death? Or does indirect causes mean direct now?
What gives?

1500 lbs in 15 minutes? I'll go ahead and call that impossible if you don't mind.

All I can say is that now with marijuana is now becoming so accepted in society, these new deaths keep popping up all of the sudden.
As if none of this has ever happened before and why hasn't it been recorded before?
Guess it's a new pandemic, no?

What a moron. Too bad someone didn't call him out on it while he was saying it.

It's much easier to OD from drinking too much water than smoking too much pot.

And I bet no one at the senate hearing called him out on his stupidity

I would lose my shite if that happened in front of me in real time.
Local officials and politicians are truly some of the dumbest people you will ever meet.

Actually another senator made him aware of his stupidity at the hearing.
quote:
But Sen. Jamie Raskin, D-Montgomery, who has proposed a bill that would legalize, regulate and tax the drug, immediately fact-checked Pristoop.
“Unless you have some other source for this, I’m afraid I’ve got to spoil the party here,” Raskin said. “Your assertion that 37 people died of a marijuana overdose in Colorado was a hoax on the DailyCurrant and the Comedy Central website.”
