Why does the Fresh Prince's mom get a pass for her deplorable actions?

Who would send their teenage child completely across the country for getting into a playground scrap and even then not arrange proper transportation for this child from the airport?

Will is a teenager. I'm sure his rap about what occurred is not entirely representative of what really happened.

It would be considered racist to criticize her.

I remember an episode where she comes to visit and Uncle Phil rips her a new one and basically calls her a bad mother.

This thread is off to a surprisingly good start.

She needed to hear it

Will was also tagging walls/putting on deodorant so gang involvement wouldn't be a stretch along with the fight.
Though her idea to send him across the country was unorthodox, I never saw it as her admitting to be a bad mother. I interpreted it as her realizing she didn't have the finances to better his environment and finding another way.

His father was the real problem. Lay off the mom.

Great question. He got in one little fight and his mom got scared and told him "you're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air". She was obviously looking to dump him off on her family as soon as she got a chance.
Will had 2 shitty parents.

Will probably would have been shot if she didn't send him elsewhere

She had to flip her son's life upside down because HER life got flip turned upside down.

All this is moot since he died in the fight on the playground and BBellaire is a metaphorical pergutory.
But he was just an innocent kid. Chillin out, maxin, relaxin all cool. I mean he was just a normal kid growing up In west philly.
Then a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble in his neighborhood.
He was going to stand up to them. To tell them this community won't stand for these thugs. And that the people want a better life for themselves but he got in one little fight and his mom got scarred and sent him to live with his auntie and uncle in bel aire

At least she was a good enough mother to know she was a bad mother, if that makes sense

Uncle Phil was probably pissed off he had to raise his sister in law kid.
