...endorsement companies to help boost a player's salary without affecting the salary cap?

For example, the Saints and Jimmy Graham sign a 5 year $30 million deal but Jimmy Graham also suddenly becomes the spokesperson for Mercedez and gets paid $5 million per year to do that.

I'm sure there are rules against it but it would be tough to prove and the NFL isn't a court where they could subpoena records

Like Batman said, how would the NFL being able to prosecute?

Sort of like some of the shady tactics used in NCAA recruiting.

Well Buick paid Tiger Woods $50 million a year to accomplish precisely dick for them. With that kind of money, they could have hired a few dozen vehicle engineers to make their cars worth a shite and hired a marketing company to make them desirable, so I didn't see why Mercedes would worry about $5 million going to Jimmy Graham.

BTW, this would never happen. There are very few NFL players that have the cache with the public to get an endorsement deal with a high end car company and Jimmy Graham isn't one of them. If Graham really wanted to make extra money, he would take less base money in his contract so the Saints can make a run at a Super Bowl. Being a big part of a Super Bowl winner boosts your profile and raises your endorsement appeal tremendously. Just look at the uptick in endorsements for Drew Brees pre and post Super Bowl win.

If his agent was worth a shite, he'd be telling him these things.

Jimmy graham is nowhere near Tiger Woods level.

Its not that they would care about the 5 million....but why give him that much when you can get him for probably 1-2 mil a year instead if you want. Theres no benefit to overpaying him, theres no a huge market for his endorsement nor is there a big advantage to having him as a spokesman like there is for Woods

IIRC, the 49ers got in trouble for this in he 90s when Deion Sanders just happened to get a contract with Sega when he signed with them...

They would just do what they did to Dallas & Washington, take away cap money and give it to the other teams. Or do what they have done to the Pats, Saints, and Steelers take away draft picks.

no shite. The nfl would drop the hammer and make an example of a team trying to do this

As far as why would Mercedes do this? The saints would magically reduce their sponsorship fee or give them more marketing than they previously agreed to to cover Graham's fees. Mercedes would do it bc they'd get an NFL star to endorse cars for basically free

If there is anything that we've learned over the last few years, the NFL doesn't need proof to hand down punishment.

They took draft picks and issued fines to the 49ers back in 2000 for their cap cheating during the 90s, FWIW.

Maybe so....but it's also not a court that requires proof or it's members maintain their constitutional rights.

The question would be...is it worth trying to frick over other teams and get caught?

To counter that point though, the nfl doesn't need cold hard facts to lay down the law against teams.
Example- Bounty Gate

I would fire my agent on the spot if he suggested this. It's hard as hell to win a Super Bowl. Depending solely on a Super Bowl for money wouldn't be too smart.
