His goal is to open his own sports merchandise store. "I just need to get retail knowledge," Elam told the team's website. "That's basically what I'm doing. I'm getting that knowledge for when it's time." Elam applied online to five stores before being hired at Finish Line a month ago, raising eyebrows considering he made $3.7 million last season (salary and signing bonus) as the 32nd pick in the draft.

Pretty cool to see he's thinking about a life outside football and trying to build experience for it

Good for him.

Cue the "he's taking a job away from someone who really needs it" crowd shortly.

That same crowd probably complains about football players who are broke after their careers end

after taxes and shite, that's less than $2 million. sure, that's just one season. but most players are lucky to play into their 30s, so even if he makes around $15 mil in his career, he has to live the rest of his life off that. good on him for thinking about the rest of his life.

I applaud him for what he's doing, but if he can't live an entire life off of 15 million then he probably wouldn't be able to run a successful business

Even so, he's working towards a career for after football so he can have something to do and have more cash flow. If I won a 15 million dollar lottery tomorrow I would still try find a job and source of income

Having the foresight to do what he's currently doing leads me to believe that he wouldn't have much trouble living off of $15MM for the rest of his life if he had to.

As would I, but it'd be something like working at a beer store or something like that where I could just talk about what I like all day and get paid for it.

If he couldn't live off the interest 15 million would generate then he wouldn't be very successful

You're assuming he'd even make that much. He could have a career-ending injury tomorrow and never get that second check. At least he has something planned for his life after his career is over. At worst at least he has some retail experience on his resume. If he's successful, he'll be a job creator.

I was speaking more towards the previous poster saying he would have to live his life off 15 million like that would be tough. In one year he's made more than many people will make in a lifetime, so even if he gets hurt today he should be able to live comfortably off of interest for the rest of his life
