Just got my Tikka 338 win mag back from getting a brake put on and was planning on putting an old leupold on top, but having trouble putting an old scope on a new gun and started looking at new glass and am very impressed with the Vortex, specifically the Viper PST 4-16x50. Got a hunt of a lifetime planned for 2015, and don't want to be disappointed

Vortex makes some nice scopes, another somewhat unknown is Konus they make very good glass at a very inexpensive price. I haven't owned Vortex before, but have shot with them some they will do what you want.

They are really good quality scopes. If I were you, I would wait for these to start shipping LINK. It costs more but I would expect that you get your money back in the quality and dependability that the name carries.

I have a vortex diamondback on my savage 243. It's a really good scope especially for the price. It's been holding up well and holding a zero. No problems at all with it.

I put a vortex viper pst on my AR and LOVE it! A good friend just put a razor hd on his 308 and couldn't be happier. FWIW

I've heard good things about them and there customer service department is great. I am going to stick with Nikon monarch for my mid range priced scopes. Nothing against vortex if just been really happy with the monarchs over the years.

I have the Viper PST 4x16 on my 7mm mag. I absolutely love it and been shooting out to 1k yards with it. Customer service is great plus you have a lifetime warranty. If it was me with a 338 I might look at the 6x24 or the Razor HD package.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned it's light gathering capabilities?

IMO that quality is MUCH more important than anything else. It is why I will no longer buy Nikon scopes.

I want to be able to see when it's dark, period.

DirtyMike, Good question. This was my biggest problem too cause my eyes go worthless when the sun is setting. Before I got the Viper I had a Zeiss which was outstanding for gathering light. On my AR I have an ACOG which is even better. The Viper series is not going to be up to par with the higher name brands for gathering light honestly. However it will and has gotten me to the end of shooting hours, so it's sufficient enough for me. The light gathering is something you sacrifice when looking for magnification. Unless your willing to spend thousands. Hope that helps

Thanks, I am really looking forward to it. My OT baller best friend goes to Alaska once a year and comes back with incredible stories, and this is his dream hunt and I was fortunate enough to be able to make this one. I am really excited.

Guides name is Mike "Buck" Bowden with Hidden Alaska Outfitters, buddy has hunted with them once before Hidden Alaska

I have the same Viper PST you mentioned in the your post. I've now owned two different Vortex scopes and don't have any complaints about either of them. Go with Vortex.

I am looking to shoot in the 2-400 yard range and want to be able to make a 500 yard shot (at a moose)so I dont think to 6x24 would be good for that, I am afraid of having a hard time with quickly finding the target with the 6 power???
