If you're a shooter, please teach your wife/SO/gf/dime-piece etc. how to shoot. I've seen numerous shooters lately who have never thought of teaching the lady and it is something I'm very big about.

Women benefit from firearms more than men. It could save her arse (or yours) one day.

It's also fun to share in shooting sports with them.

Most of them can shoot better out the box than us too.

I just hate hearing stories of women being stalked and raped and waiting on police while they are beaten and abducted. It could easily be prevented if said woman took responsibility for her safety. The police will never be there in time.

I'm always trying to get her out to the range with me. Now with the baby, it's hard for us both to go. We got into a little spat the other night when I took her Glock 40 out of her night stand and put it in mine. I told her she could have it back when she took in some range time.

She doesn't want to.

Guns are dirty and loud and scary and she might break a nail.

In theory I agree Bapple.

However sometimes reality is a bit different with the fiancee.

Case in point..she wants a CC gun.

We go into the local PSA here to look at semi-auto's. Guy behind counter hands her a Shield in 9mm. Immediately she takes gun and crosses left thumb over right thumb BEHIND the slide.

Me.. "Hun don't put your thumb there...line them up like I showed you at the range or when you shoot it you'll lose some skin off your left hand."

Her... "Don't tell me what to do"

Me.., (as I hand the gun back to the counter guy)"We're done here..thanks Chief"

Her (gives me the "Your an a-hole look" all the way to parking lot.

I'm torn on this issue. I do want my wife to be able to protect herself. She works in the school system and can't carry a gun daily. I've got plenty of them around, but she doesn't know how to use any of them. I've got a killer mini dachshund to ward off potential uninvited guests. He doesn't care for the invited guests.

I'm highly concerned about my wife being able to properly shoot a handgun, mostly thinking about my own well being here.

Sucks you can't shoot, huh?

Easy solution: Teach her the proper method or take a class with her and let and instructor do it.

I'm telling you, you have no idea how much ONE range trip changes things in their mind. They have a feeling of independence, empowerment, and control. It also helps you not have to worry about her if you aren't home.

The best way to defend someone is to give her the tools to defend herself.

my gf wants to get her CHL with me at the end of the semester, but she's never shot... I should definitely take her to the range a few times before doing this, but other tips?

Mine is the same except she adds that guns should only be had by military and police. Hates my meager arsenal.

You shouldn't start her on a 12 gauge or pocket pistol for sure.

More tips can be found here:

I hope your arsenal isn't bigger than Zimmerman's!

But in all honesty, just hit her with some reality. She's in trouble - she calls police.

The difference in her and a cop?

Her - no gun
Cop - has gun

That can easily change if she just learns how to shoot.

My advice to everyone if your woman has that mentality, don't be pushy but educate her as much as you can. Or show her my videos.

Start her off on a .22 and let her have fun with it. I see too many guys try to get their SO's to shoot their .357 / 45ACP / .44 Mag and it scares them away from guns for life.

If you really want her to share your hobby and/or be able to protect herself, start her off small and let her get the hang of it.

I agree. My wife is an NRA certified rimfire instructor (summer camp instructor), out shoots me 2:1 in the dove field, I don't even shoot skeet with her anymore out of embarrassment...

But she is not as confident with a hand gun. Not scared to shoot, just need to get her more practice time...

As a bonus she loves to fish fresh and salt (and gets to go out more than me due to the nature of her job). Also loves to go to LSU football and baseball games.

And makes me a sammich any time I ask, hell I don't even have to ask half the time...
