Lady Tigers vs TN Thursday, a very, very big game for the program (long)

I view Thursday’s game versus Tennessee as perhaps the biggest to date for this team and a major “indicator” as to where NC has the program. A close loss or a win shows that any hangover from this recent losing streak is over and the team and coaches were prepared to bounce back to maybe being the very good (top 10ish) team they were until a few weeks ago.

However a blowout loss or a sloppy loss tells me the problems for this team are deep and the prospect for a good run in either the SEC or NCAA tourney are dim at best.

I think even the most optimistic Lady Tiger fan would agree that there is something to be very concerned about (off court) if we do not show up Thursday. Beyond the implications of our SEC and NCAA seed, losing badly to UT makes the Alabama game (a few weeks ago a very likely win) even more a must win as 7-9 in SEC even with our high RPI will mean a 7ish seed meaning we will have to face a 2 seed second round at home (ala Louisville, Stanford etc.).

I have been optimistic most of this season, but the Arkansas game was more than just a loss on the court. The players look lost and the chemistry between them and the coaches looks very strained. I feel like we are all “missing something” that could go deeper. I hope I am wrong and I have confidence we will play TN very hard, like we did when we won in Knoxvegas earlier this year. But, if we do not play well and show 40 minutes effort, I believe we have to assume we have bigger issues than just wins and losses.

For the last 10 games of last season and the first 20 or so this year, we have been a top 10 (and at times better) team. We have beaten quality teams and not had a “bad” loss. The seniors were leading and the younger players were showing signs of real talent as we built a bench that could go 5 deep. We were in position to win the SEC and have at worst a #2-3 seed playing the toughest RPI schedule to date in the country. And then the wheels fell off. Getting behind 22-4 at 5-7 UGA, losing home games to quality teams, but teams we should beat. And then last weekend losing at home after leading by 15 in second half to 4-9 Arkansas. We have fallen out of the AP top 25 for the first time in recent memory (2 years?) and are in real danger of finishing 6-9th in SEC. Our on court leader JK, looked like she was holding back in the last press conference and NC continues to point out the bright spots in the current losing streak. Needless to say something is very wrong when a team that starts 3 seniors who make up 70% of the 3 pointers, 48% of the points and 70% of the blocked shots is playing like this late in the year. Not to say we do not have a good core returning, but as far as leadership, this year’s seniors have seen a lot and have experience in 3 NCAA torments.

I have been “hot and cold” on NC from day one and was 100% ready to acknowledge that she was doing a very good job in many areas and that my worries mid-year last season were unfounded…but now, I think most fans would agree if we finish the year anywhere close to how we have played the last few weeks, the program has major issues. Still plenty of time to get back on track and just as many reason to think we will end on a high note…but a poor showing Thursday is a very bad sign. I always root for the team and that includes the coaches, but curios to know if others feels there may be deeper issues here.

Not ready to jump off the deep end...but there is concern. Unfortunately, when one loss becomes two, which then becomes three, chemistry/self-doubt/confidence issues become apparent. Winning cures all ills.

The mystery is why this team can't put 40 minutes together. They outplayed Georgia for 30 minutes...but the other 10 minutes were so bad, it didn't matter. They dominated Arkansas for 22 minutes...then completely wet the bed the final 18. Hard to say if the coaches, players, or who is to blame for that.

I agree that how this team finishes is a big deal. Can the coaches "rescue" this season? Or will the downhill slide continue? There is still plenty to play for. If they beat Tennessee and Alabama and win a couple of SEC tournament games, LSU can restore the 4-5 seed that they seemingly had locked up 3 weeks ago.

I don't like to speak in "absolutes", but I agree that the next couple of weeks are potentially very telling about the future...

I just keep thinking there is more than meets the eye here, and certionaly it could just be we are not as good as we thought, the team is tired or we have some unknown injuries, but time will tell.

This wouldn't surprise me. I know it's the end of the season for everyone, but word is that she works them pretty hard and they do a LOT of things out in the community (2-3 appearances per week...which is very commendable). They may be wearing down.

And they have been pretty quiet about Moncrief's injury, which is normally a red flag something might be wrong.

This team IS good enough...they just have to do it.

Secman12.........and everyone else........I agree with all that you've said, except this..........

I do think how the team plays on Thursday will be telling. But I'm not sure it will reveal much in terms of the state of the "program". I think it reveals a lot about this particular team. Considering how the teams in the previous two seasons have performed, the coaching staff is certainly allowed a little leeway. The current play and attitude of this team appears to have snowballed, and I'm not sure there's much that can be done at this point. It's up to the players to turn it around this late in the season. Nikki and her staff have done a very good job up to the point where this current six game stretch began.

Its not time to lose confidence in the coaching staff just yet. But if this continues into next season, THEN I'd be concerned. With that being said, this team is very much talented enough to win against Tennessee on Thursday............especially with the game being at home. But they're going to have to play a complete game......................something they haven't done for nearly a month now.

Even bigger game for the coach. She has other interest and is letting a good team down.

Ok, Hot Shot, care to expound on that? You sound like you think you have a secret that you are keeping from the rest of us or some sort of commentary that you want to make.

Agree with most of above...I am worried, but also know with college kids it can all change quickly and I too would challenge any poster trying to spread rumors to put up or shut up.

I look for a strong effort Thursday and a big crowd.

I look forward to our game against y'all Thursday. Curry has them actually playing like a decent team since conference play started.

The way we have been playing lately, I am very worried. The seniors deserve better.

“It’s really important,” McKinney said. “You can tell how much a team cares about each other and has each other’s back by defense. That’s where we’re struggling. That goes to what we do off the court. If you don’t spend time with a person off the court, you don’t get to know much about them. Character flows over.”

quote:

“Tennessee really doesn’t play defense,” Ballard said Tuesday. “They have some good players who can play defense, but as a team they don’t play defense. You’ve got to take it to where there heart is, which is in the middle.”

After that she better not take this game off like so many others this season.

My dearly departed father used to have an expression that he would use when he was in a bad mood and the kids would give him a hard time: "Don't poke the bear"

I hope Ballard's poking of the bear doesn't result in the entire team getting a piece of their arse chewed off by Tennessee tonight. She better back her words up. Granted, she torched them in the first game, but I am sure they have a little something waiting for her tonight. Should be interesting.

This isn't the first time she's said something dumb this year. I think she said something about A&M a couple of weeks ago.
